the cheapeast
except Delta, b/c I hate them.
but I love flying Alitalia.
I just recently also flew there on Iberia, which was cool. we had a stop over in Madrid...but it wasn't that bad.
I've also flown there on American. and Air France. both really good I think. I also have ridiculous FF miles with American and it's partners, so I do try to use them when I can.
I like Continental, I just don't think I've even flown them to Europe.
I TRY to fly direct, but if the money is worth a few hour layover, I'll inconvenience myself a touch to have more to spend on the vacay itself.

Re: Airline to use for Italy trip
If you plan on seeing Rome or Southern Italy I would DEF look into EuroFly.
They are cheaper than Alitalia, AA etc...
The furthest North they fly is Rome. We flew into Rome & than took a train ride North (to Viareggio/Pisa) from there...about 3 hrs.
ETA: the planes are nice, clean & comfortable. Each seat has their own tv & they try not to book the entire plane out...so you aren't sitting on top of everyone...you have room to spread out into other seats.

Re: Airline to use for Italy trip
We just took TAP Portugal to Italy (via Lisbon). We used miles so we had to go whatever way we could...I will say TAP was a very nice airline (spacious, individual tvs with loads of movies and games) and if they hadn't lost my luggage I'd definitely fly them again!

I've flown Alitalia and Lufthansa.
I loved Lufthansa (but we had a stop in Frankfurt first).

Re: Airline to use for Italy trip
We flew Iberia to Rome last year - had to change planes in Madrid. They had the best price at the time, and the flights were all on time which is a plus. I did find that the planes we were on where a little dirty - lots of garbage that was not picked up during the flights. My son booked on Alitalia last year, and one of his flights turned out to be a code share flight which was operated by Delta, and he had major delays, missed connections, lost luggage, and overall poor service. He said he would never fly Delta to Europe again as this was the second time recently he had problems with his Delta flights in Europe. His return flight was on Alitalia, as was his wife's flight there {she went earlier with her mother) and they were very happy with Alitalia.
