Alcoholics and Cooking with Wine/Booze

Is this a no-no? I am making filet mignon for Easter and I found 2 great recipes - one is with red wine and one is with Jack Daniels. One of our guests is a recovering alcoholic. I would think that all alcohol content is burned off during the cooking process but that's just a guess.

What do you think?

I don't know, a recovering alcoholic requested that I don't use alcohol in my cooking, even though it technically cooks off. But if he eats out, most restaurants use wine in stuff.

Personally I would weigh when they actually went into recovery. I may consider using the recipes if they have been sober for years. But if they just got out of a rehab program, I would opt for another food item. True - the alcohol itself burns right off - but you don't know what their triggers are.

I would also consider what kind of program they were in - are they a member of AA or are they on their own doing it cold turkey. In rehab programs they are told that if they can't handle a situation, its their responsibility to work around it... like call their sponsor or leave the party.

I have someone very close to me who is a recovered alcoholic and I asked him for you. He told me that you need to ask him. Some recovered alcoholics are VERY strict and will be very upset if you cook with alcohol, even if it does burn off, others are not as strict.

So if it were me I would ask him/her to make sure they are okay with it.

My mom would flip if she found out someone used cooking wine in her food...you should have seen the begging I had to do to get a daquiri ice at baskin robbins. She has also been sober for 35 years. She consideres it a slip.

I'm glad you chose a different recipe because, as an FYI, I just watched a show on the food network where they tested how much of the alcohol actually cooks off when you cook with it, and shockingly, only 1/4 of it cooks offChat Icon Anyway, I just thought I'd share that.

My mother is a recovering alcoholic and she always asks if alcohol is used when cooking. I would stay away from it!

Honestly it does cook off but to not upset anyone I would stay away from it. People in recovery have different views regarding this.

Re: Alcoholics and Cooking with Wine/Booze

yeah, I think you made the right decision.... I don't think many alcoholics want to even remember what wine tastes like..... alcohol or not....
