Alex Trebek Diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer

This makes me so sad, more so for my grandparents. They have this cute little tradition where every night they sit down together and watch Jeopardy at 7. It's been their tradition since the early 80s. My grandparents are now 86 and 91 years old, and they were both choking up when they heard the news today Chat Icon Just sad because it's one of those little things that have been so consistent for them, and it just won't be the same without him on TV! I hope he pulls through, but I don't think it's looking too good.

My DD loves watching this show. She was actually sad when we found out he was retiring. It’s heartbreaking.

Yes I remember being surprised that he said he wants to continue on as much as possible and his contract is for 3 more years.

Re: alex trebek

I'm really sad about this one as well and celebrity deaths usually don't effect me.
Like other's said... it was always on in my house when my mom was making dinner or during dinner on our little TV in the kitchen. LOL
Was the only show allowed,
He seems like such a genuine guy too.

Re: alex trebek

I am a huge fan of the Buzzr channel- all the classic game shows- and recently they started showing Classic Concentration and he hosted that in the mid 80s.... that's a great show too and he was great on that.

This was very sad to hear. My dad, who was also recently diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer, is a huge Jeopardy fan. We always say he should've gone on the show.

Back in July he hinted at maybe retiring, but then he changed his mind.

I was so incredibly sad when I heard the news.
OP, my 90 year old grandmother watches it every night and used to watch it with my grandfather nightly when he was alive. I don’t even want to mention it to her because I know she will be devastated to hear the news.

Such a staple and almost ritual in our house. I think we're all going to be in shock though. Prognosis is 2-6 months st best. Only 2% beat stage IV. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: alex trebek

Why is this particular cancer so hard to beat?
Is it because you can't operate on the pancreas?

Does it not respond to chemo like other cancers?

I think it’s because it’s almost symptom-less until it’s too far gone.

It's the stage I believe. Stage 4 means it's metastasized and spread. My father is also stage 4. The survival rates for his cancer are less than 5% for 5 years. Chat Icon

Ah ok- kind of like Ovarian cancer
They say you don't really have any symptoms of that until it's progressed

Re: alex trebek

Pancreatic cancer is hard to find early. The pancreas is deep inside the body, so early tumors can’t be seen or felt by health care providers during routine physical exams. People usually have no symptoms until the cancer has become very large or has already spread to other organs.
There are no early detections. My mom has passed away from it, so I lived it, you can go downhill pretty quicklyChat Icon

Yes, no symptoms and so hard to detect early. It’s really so sad. My DH’s old boss had it, also dx at stage four. Terrible.
