all this dilated & effaced talk...

... can anyone explain the terminology? I haven't gotten to that point in the pregnancy (or in the pg books Chat Icon), so I'm always confused when you guys say it. HELP! Chat Icon

Dilation is when the cervix opens up. Your cervix has to dialate to 10cm in order to push the baby out. You are considered to be in full on labor when you hit 4cm. Contractions help your cervix to dialate.

Effacement is the thinning of the cervix. In addition to dilating (as if it doesn't have enough to do!) the cervix also has to thin out and soften. Usually (I think) the cervix thins out completely (100% effaced) before you hit 10cm of dialation.

I think I read somewhere the 411 rule... do u know what that is? I assume the 4 is the cm dilated, but what's the rest?

I guess I was lucky...they offered it to me at 2cm!! Good thing, because I never got past 3 1/2!!
