Almost 40 weeks - appointment update

Well... I just had my almost 40 week appointment. Last week they wanted to discuss inducing me this week if I didn't have the baby, because I gained a lot of weight in 1 week - what appeared to be all fluids. I worked from home today so since I was on the couch all day I am not swollen at all, and I didn't gain ANY weight since last week. They said I can still be induced if I wanted to and I said HELL NO!!! Chat Icon I would rather wait until Chat Icon is ready. I had to go on the fetal monitor again because the baby barely moves anymore unless I am purposely trying to make him move. There was no movement for a while, so they had me drink 2 cups of juice... then he started moving a lot.
So right now I am just waiting... and waiting... if nothing happens by next Friday I will have a biophysical profile (sono) done at 41 weeks, and another at 41w3d. Hopefully Chat Icon will decide to come out before then.

I'm so happy for you that you didn't gain more and they aren't bothering you or forcing you to be induced. You know your body and it obviously was because last week's appointment was so late in the day after working and being on your feet. Stay home whenever you can and rest! You're almost there!!! I think I have a negative attitude towards inducing because of some friends' and my sister's experiences with being induced. Maybe at 41.5 weeks I will go for it but now I still have some time.

wow!! good luck!! You are one patient person!! I'm already getting impatient to meet my little girl and I am only 30 weeks... I'm just curious, what are some of the cons to inducing? I know NOTHING about it!

Well, everyone I know that was induced had horrible painful labor and ended with a c-section. I know this is NOT the case for everyone... many people on here will tell you their inductions were sucessful. I feel like a lot of Drs do it too early or without good reason, so I would rather wait it out.

This is from babycenter.com:
What risks are associated with inducing labor?

While induction is generally safe, it does carry some risk, which may vary according to the methods used and your individual situation. Pitocin, prostaglandins, or nipple stimulation (explained below) occasionally hyperstimulate the uterus, meaning that the contractions come too frequently or are abnormally long and strong. This in turn can stress your baby.

In rare cases, prostaglandins or Pitocin also cause placental abruption or even uterine rupture, although ruptures are extremely rare in women who've never had a c-section or other uterine surgery.

One commonly used prostaglandin, misoprostol, is associated with a relatively high rate of rupture in women attempting a vaginal birth after a cesarean (VBAC) and should never be used in women with a scarred uterus. Some experts don't think women attempting VBAC should be induced with Pitocin, either.

To assess the frequency and length of your contractions as well as your baby's heart rate, you'll need to have continuous electronic fetal monitoring during an induced labor. You'll probably have to lie or sit while being monitored, but some hospitals offer telemetry, which lets you walk around during the process.

Inducing labor can take a long time, particularly if you start with an unripe cervix, and this process can be hard on you and your partner psychologically. (On the other hand, among women who go past their due date, the seemingly endless wait for labor to begin may be even more trying.)

And if the induction doesn't work, you'll need a c-section. Having a c-section after a long labor or unsuccessful induction is associated with higher rates of complications than you'd face with a planned c-section.

Remember that your practitioner will recommend inducing your labor only when she believes that the risks to you and your baby of waiting for labor to begin on its own are higher than the risks of intervening.

You definently have patience. I wouldn't jump at the chance for induction either.

What I did when DS was 4 days late, I went to Chili's and had me some VERY HOT buffalo wings! worked like a charm

Re: Almost 40 weeks - appointment update

My due date was yesterday (5/14) and still not sign of my sweet baby boy...I guess he's content where he is Chat Icon

My OB said if I don't deliver by this weekend, he'll induce either Monday or Tuesday. I haven't weighed myself in a few days, but I know I've packed on a few pounds this last week Chat Icon

Good luck!

Wow! I was the exact same way! I told my doctor that I didn't want to get induced unless it was absolutely necessary!
I was 5 days late and my son decided to make his entrance on his own. I had a fairly easy labor and delivery and I was so happy that I didn't have to get induced. I hope your baby makes his entrance soon!
