Alt-right speech cancelled at UC Berkley after violent protest
Second time Yiannopoulos speech canceled this month. He had been scheduled to speak at UCDavis mid-January but canceled due to protest.

He's the scum of the earth. I'm surprised trump didn't give him a cabinet position.

I can't fathom an institute of higher learning giving this breitbart bigot and internet troll a platform to spread his hate. Apparently the trashbag has a college tour going on across the country.

He'll probably replace Spicer when his swollen bloodshot eyes finally pop out of his head at one of his press conferences.

Of course the first thing Trump did when he woke up this morning was send out a tweet in defense of him and threatening to pull UC Berkeleys federal funding. %^*#+!!!! You tweet about that but never acknowledge Quebec (or any number of other important events).

What grounds would he have to pull federal funding? When will he realize he can't just do things his way because he doesn't agree.

The problem is he can't, but he will because they are letting him. The Republicans are apparently so power drunk that they are willing to let him do whatever he wants as long as they get to too.

His tweet ended with a question mark so I think it's safe to assume he doesn't even know the answer to that. I think it's more a ploy to rile up his followers.

Of course that's exactly what he's doing. Just like this constant barrage of un-POTUS like tweets and statements from POTUS is a valiant effort to normalize vitriolic rhetoric.

Re: Alt-right speech cancelled at UC Berkley after violent protest
If people want to peacefully protest that's fine, but resorting to violence is not the answer.

Re: Alt-right speech cancelled at UC Berkley after violent protest
This is a riot, not a protest. To place it in the same category as all of the peaceful protests that have been going on in the country is insulting and discredits and belies the purpose of all of the protests.
UCB is one of the most prestigious universities for higher learning in this country. My goddaughter attends the school and it is a very impressive campus. IMO UCB should NOT have cancelled the speech for two reasons. 1. As a place of superior higher learning, it should have allowed the speech to go on for the sake of education. It has nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing with the speaker's views; its about hearing what he has to say and being able to take away something - whatever it may be- from learning about his views. 2. Cancelling the speech was essentially giving in to a bunch of violent neanderthals. I read some place that they don't even believe it was the students but rather an outside group that dedicates itself to inciting riots.

The right to speak at a university is not a protected right granted by our constitution.. that you would even attempt to align the two is ridiculous. There is NO hypocricy here, this is a matter of public safety!

Re: Alt-right speech cancelled at UC Berkley after violent protest
Hate speech has no place anywhere, let alone an institute of education. What is there to be learned of any value from the "Dangerous F*ggot* college tour? By that logic colleges should have given Hitler a platform to spread his antisemitic garbage. I would be livid if I were paying out the nose for tuition and administration gave this piece of trash internet troll a platform to spread his hate.

Re: Alt-right speech cancelled at UC Berkley after violent protest
The administration of the school did not invite him to speak. He was invited by a campus organization.
I think he's an ass and I wouldn't go hear him speak, but he has every right to do so. Unfortunately, he has just as much right to free speech as anyone else.
Berkley Chancellor's Message
The riot that went on is a disgrace. The entire message gets lost in the violence.

Free speech is free speech whether you like it or not. You can't pick and choose who you allow to have it just because you don't like it. There is absolutely no excuse for the violence that happened - throwing rocks and fireworks at police, Molotov cocktails were thrown and Trump supporters were peppered sprayed. Everyone is all up in arms saying that Trump supporters are instigating hate and the world is coming to an end, but here you go, just another instance that it was the other side. Everyone should be coming out and condemning the riots and not focusing on who was the one speaking because it is irrelevant.

While agree with you in spirit, hate speech is still free speech. Once you start silencing one kind of speech because it is offensive, you begin to slide down that slippery slope.. where does it end?

Do we know for a fact that it was cancelled by the organization that invited him? Or maybe he cancelled on his own.

The university cancelled it because of the violence. It was getting way too dangerous for everyone in the area. I'm still trying to get the whole story. The violent rioters were from off-campus. Students on campus were protesting peacefully for hours.
1st Amendment freedom of speech means that the government can't arrest you. It doesn't guarantee that you can speak anywhere you want at any time you want. It also doesn't mean that there won't be consequences for what you say.
So far, I can't find anything about who is claiming responsibility for inciting the riots.
Starting violent riots and attacking the police is a horrible act, no matter who does it, where they do it, and for what reason.

The violence was definitely wrong but they weren't the first school to cancel his hate tour. Doubt they'll be the last.
