Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
Well, DS is allergic to eggs, so he can't have cake. That means DD doesn't get it either. I will make them an egg-free cake for their 2nd birthday, I honestly don't see any harm in that. The eat a cookie every once in awhile as a treat, same with ice cream. They've never had candy.
I really don't see a big deal with sweets being a once in awhile thing. There is no reason to deprive them of that As long is its not an everyday thing, and done in moderation. I actually believe that by teaching them NOW that it is ok as a once in awhile thing will be something they will carry with them as they get older. I don't want them to see sweets as something "forbidden." To me that kind of mentality leads to something worse.
They love love love fruit though, will always eat that before anything else.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
DS didn't have much sweets at all when he was 2. Somewhere in there, we fell in with a couple new kids (playdates and such), and they always offered sweets--cookies, ice cream, lollipops, etc. So that's where he had has introduction, and if I had to do it over again, I would have told them none for us, please. But it's hard when your kid sees the others eating it and wants some too.
We have gotten better lately, but the Pandora's box has been opened and he asks for sweets often now. We negotiate how many he gets and try to keep them to a minimum.
But I write all this just to say, don't go there if she doesn't want it. She doesn't need it, and she'll discover it soon enough.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
I think they reacted that way because it's pretty main stream for birthdays to have cake.
DD has cake and such on special occasions. Sometimes I get ice cream or an ice and she has some of mine, because frankly, she won't eat an entire ice cream.
She's had cookies and donuts, brownies, etc. But not all of the time. I don't see anything wrong with it. I try not to keep stuff like that in the house, because I will be the one to eat it all.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
Cailen at age 2 did not care about candy at all - now he sees his sisters eating it - he hates chocolate, cookies, and cake, but loves airheads, swedish fish, jelly beans, things like that.
I let him have it when his sisters have it. I don't buy candy or junk - not purposely - it is just not even on my radar. He would much rather have fruit over candy anyway - but I would say he eats some sweets socially.... He will have 1 or 2 pieces and then say he is done.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
DD rarely eats cake...she's not had an candy yet..buttt she looves her cookies, and I'm so upset about it..she always wants a cookie, she begs me for cookies..normally I can get away with giving her pieces of apple or other fruit etc..I do not give her the regular run of the mill cookies, I usually give her a grammy sammy organic cookie or an earths best grahams...also when we're out to dinner we let her have ice cream sometimes

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
My DD is just about 18 months and she rarely eats processed sweets. She typically eats fruit and organic graham crackers and that is it. Once in a while she will get ice cream or cake at parties, but she is very sugar sensitive and does not sleep well when she eats it.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
MY kids do not get a lot of sweets but I do allow the occasional cake, cookie or ice cream for my 2 year old and my 6 year old is allowed candy, chocolate and cake. Most of the times they get these is at a party or for a holiday. My kids have never had soda. My 6 year old is allowed one juice a day otherwise it's milk and water. My 2 year old only gets milk and water, has not had juice.
Personally, I don't see a need to push all the sweet stuff on kids. They will have enough of it throughout their life, why start early with it? My kids love fruits and will quite often only have a little "treat" and then ask for the fruit instead.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
Ashley will only have a piece of cake at a birthday party, and by a piece, I mean a few bites. She's not into it all that much. I do not give her candy or cookies. She has never had either, so she doesn't miss what she doesn't know. She doesn't drink juice either- only milk and water. She has such a high energy level that I cannot imagine giving her any extra sugars on a daily basis.

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
Teddy has had all of these, but to be honest his favorite things on earth are fruits and Veggies. Dh and I actually laid a cupcake in front of him (as he says Cake Cake) and a pineapple, watermelon, blueberry, and melon salad and he chose the salad. The same goes for Vegetables. I believe everything with in it's limits. Minus soda.....I am a soda addict. But I will say....when I was in high school one of the girls in my class would eat more junk than any one I had ever met in my life. Her mother didn't allow junk food in the house and she would just eat it when she left the house. Part of dealing with teens right?

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
I am glad you posted this. I think its great that your daughter does not eat junk. I have a terrible sweet tooth and I desperately want my daughter to have good eating habits. I have always said that I wouldn't give my daughter junk food until she is old enough to ask for it. I don't want her to develop a taste for it. So far I think it is working. I had an opportunity to do a smash the cake photo session, so I had to take advantage. But she didn't like the cake!!! I had to stick yogurt treats inside the cupcake for her to eat it. Leslie Simmons did an incredible job with the pictures and she talks about my daughter ("Baby I") disliking the cake in her blog. It is at the very bottom of the page titled "None for me thanks!" If you look at the first photo closely, you can see that my daughter is actually taking out a yogurt treat instead of a piece of cake!

Landon only has cake on birthdays. Never any candy. But he does eat cookies as a treat when he finishes all of his dinner.
Basically the same. My kids never have chocolate because D is allergic to dairy. They have had cake on their 1st BDay. They eat Earths Best graham sticks or vanilla cookies as a snack. They have also had soy ice cream maybe 3 times. People always want to give our kids food

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
Chelsea has had cake at birthday parties.
She gets a cookie with milk at night but usually throws it to the dogs.
As for candy I usually bribe her M&M's if I need her to not flip out in a store or am trying to get her to go on the potty. It is a very rare occurrence which is probably why she still isn't potty trained!

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
DS in general does not eat any of the above. He has never had any candy (except for the chewable vitamin he thinks is candy ). But, for his birthday and others birthday parties I definitely let him have cake. Honestly, he's not bigning on it - he has a couple of bites at most but, I think to tell him no bday cake for him when everyone else has it would just be cruel. He has had chocolate from time to time (easter etc.).
In short, is it part of his regular diet - daily or even weekly or monthly - NO. But, as a treat, especially where it surrounds an occasion he does.

DS is 20 months and has never had candy, the closest he's had to cookies is teddy grahams. We had a cake at his b'day but he had no interest in eating it.
When we go to the grocery store I give him a green bean from the produce rather than a cookie sample from the bakery. Here is a pic from a few months ago of him chomping away on a green bean while shopping IMAGE
It doesn't bother him because he doesn't know the difference we don't have that stuff in the house so he doesn't know he is "missing" anything.
This is GREAT!!!!

Re: Am I alone? 2yrs old.. no candy, chocolate, cake
My kid has had these items in the past although, he prefers fruit over all of it. If I give him cookies or muffins, it's usually b/c I made it from scratch although not opposed to commercial baked goods on certain occasions. I am pretty relaxed about certain things. I see nothing wrong with the occasional sweet although, i must say I really put my foot down when it comes to soda. No soda at all!!!!!!
