Re: Am I alone in this?
I feel like i understand why some people would feel a sense of closure and happiness. But I don't feel like its the end of anything personally and doesn't make things "even" in any sense.

Re: Am I alone in this?
I'm not happy about any sort of retaliation (obviously) but I can totally understand the happiness people feel over his death. He was a mass murderer and IMO, that is just evil.

Re: Am I alone in this?
I agree with you. I understand getting closure from his death, but I don't understand the celebrating and cheering. This article sums up my feelings pretty well: USA! USA! is the wrong response

Re: Am I alone in this?
I was hesitant to say that this is also how I feel. I respect everyones views , but I myself cannot celebrate a death that resulted in violence as a means to end violence. It seems so ridiculous to me to be happy we killed someone because he masterminded killing people.
But I do respect those that feel closure from it, as is their choice.
I'm happy this man is gone from the earth yes...I just cant jump up and down and celebrate violence of any kind, its not in me.
So I guess I'm so torn with how to feel ..

This is how I personally feel as well. I respect other's right to react as they deem appropriate. Good quote!

And weren't we so insulted when people danced in the streets after the 9/11 attacks?
9/11 was unprovoked, that's why celebrating that act was condemned.

Re: Am I alone in this?
I agree. I don't like speaking up about this issue as I lost no one personally on 9/11. But I don't understand how one death brings any closure to the thousands who died that day. I told my students today while I understand the excitement, I hate celebrating a death. All I hope is that this brings our troops safely and quickly home.

Re: Am I alone in this?
I agree with you. I am thrilled that they got him, I am not upset that they had to kill him, but I can't express joy over the death of someone.

EXACTLY. two different things. Our gov't and military have been after this man for almost TEN YEARS. and they ACCOMPLISHED what they said they would. I think THAT accomplishment should absolutely be celebrated.... I don't care how anyone chooses to do it. President Bush promised we would get him... and we didn't go back on our word.
That man was responsible for the death thousands of innocent people...

Re: Am I alone in this?
If I was in the city, I think I would have celebrated. I would have celebrated with my friend who lost her dad that day and never got to recover his body. I am so happy for her that knowing that the man who was behind her life changing forever is gone. I think having so many of those people who lost loved ones, as well as NYPD and FDNY who were there that awful day, in one place celebrating the justice that was delivered was probably a very powerful feeling.

Re: Am I alone in this?
Let's not forget that this man was not going to walk into the local police precinct and turn himself in.
In that sense it really almost is like he asked for it.
I mean, think about what he did. His death, w/o a doubt was the end game.
Ideally America (forget the American people but think of America as a philosophy) would rather that all criminals go through a fair trial. But what do you do when the criminal insists on being taken by deadly force?
I'm sure the celebrations would be just as joyous had he been taken alive. The way he went was his choice.

Re: Am I alone in this?
Normally this is something I would be against, but in this case of such pure evil I have a hard time seeing a problem. Whether you agree or not I think it would be a tough argument to make that all of this fan fair was not a moral booster for our troops. A boost they desperately needed.
One of my first thoughts when I heard this news was that the terrorist, both organized and not, are going to try to come out in full force. They would react this way celebration or not.
I think the best thing we can do is show these evil people that we are united as one, and that we are not going to LET them ruin what we have.

ITA! He killed many many peoples family members, their hopes and their dreams. I dont condemn anyone for wanting to feel joy or satisfaction over his death. The fear of retaliation vs the relief that has come about to me is two seperate entities.

Exactly. Those were innocent people.
He was not an innocent man.
I have no problem with the way anyone wants to celebrate it.

Re: Am I alone in this?
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Retiring hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King Jr.

I'm 100% with you on this. I've had a knot in my stomach since last night. I don't feel any safer since this happened, or even vindicated. I'm actually more scared than ever right now.
Me too. I lost a few FB friends over sharing this same sentiment.

I was sarcastic about it. This whole thing scares me shittless. When I get scared, I get sarcastic. My real friends know me. It's the ones that don't know me that well - I understand. Everyone has their own opinions and their own need for what is right and how that "right" should be delivered. I am not offended or upset. It is what it is!
