Am I an Old Fart?

My daughter is 13 and in 7th Grade. I just had her "friend group" (5 girls) facetime me asking why she can't stay up and Facetime with them until 3:00 am. I'm like WTF, what could they be talking about until 3 am! I thought I was being super lenient saying 11 pm on weekends but I guess I'm the strict one.

What time do your teenagers go to bed or have to get off their devices?

Re: Am I an Old Fart?

My son is 12 and in seventh. I let him stay up to eleven on the weekends too. His friends tried to face time him at 1 am but he was fast asleep and did not answer. I tell my daughter who is in fifth to tell her friends good night at 10 pm. So yeah, I get it. There are many times that my daughter is waking her friends up to make sure they make the 10am zoom class with their teachers. I think you are doing the right thing fwiw. My kids and I have talked about it and they agree they don’t feel well the next day if they stay up too late. So they will say to their friends they need to sleep.

Nobody should be on Facetime that late!

No phones in bedrooms (which is where I am sure they are at 3am). Technology is great in cases like this but parents need to set limits and kids need to sleep!!!!

Re: Am I an Old Fart?

Less concerning is the face timing lateness. What I would be more alarmed about is what gives a bunch of 7th graders the right to question your parenting decisions. I would email the parents of all the girls involved and let them know what they did.

I would be outraged if any of my girls faced-timed a parent in order to question their decision.

Re: Am I an Old Fart?

At 13 that is pretty common. Mine are a little older and stay on video games all night long some days and go to sleep when I am getting up and then practically sleep all day.

Unless this interferes with school work, I don't see a problem with it, especially now when they all can not see each other in person.

Am I an Old Fart?

Nope. Lots of my coworkers have cell phone jails that they put their kids phones in when they are suppose to be sleeping. I have students who get no sleep because their friends are calling/texting them at all hours of the night. This is a difficult time but I do not think 3 am FaceTiming is acceptable ever.

YES!!! I am trying to imagine a time when as a 7th grader I would call one of my friends parents and I cannot get through the scenario in my head without cringing...unacceptable.

DD who is 9 asked if she could call up her friend's mom and ask if she could join Messenger Kids because she wanted to chat with her on there because she misses her.
Even that I said no way. I said I'll friend the mother on FB and send her a request for the daughter to be your friend.
We don't call up parents.

I agree. I can never imagine myself or my friends ever doing that but they weren't argumentative. They asked and I told them the reasons why and that was that. I actually didn't mind them asking me because my daughter is autistic and has some social issues and I want her friends to be able to ask me questions and let me know when something is wrong so I can intervene a bit. They call me all the time for advice. I just couldn't believe they were all up that late!

Mine is 13, and that would be a no from me. 11pm is the latest now with no school. 9:30 on a regular school night.

This is the norm in my house currently with a 13 and 15 year old. They keep up with their school work without issue, during real school weeks they can only pull this off on Friday/Saturday nights.

I think people assume because it is so late they are 'up to no good' when I check on them it is always innocent like they do workout videos together, watch movies together or are doing homework together.

Lol thanks for your input. I have 9th and 11th grade honor students, one of whom is an elite athlete (travels all over North America for his sport) so I guess inappropriate works for us. Chat Icon

Sorry that was a swift overreaction on my part lol. I do not feel that it’s appropriate however for an13 year old to be up all night chatting with friends on social media. And I don’t think it’s appropriate for any child to question another child’s parent. Why can’t they do it during the day? I’m not trying to insult anyone’s parenting.I keep reading these stories where kids are lured on social media by predators and they end up meeting up and kids that are sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night to meet guys while the parents are asleep and have no idea. I just think it’s better to have an eye on what’s going on. For the older teens I don’t think it’s as bad but I think you might have a problem getting them back into the swing of things but maybe not. We are all going a little nutty. Sorry for what I said!

No apologies necessary! It’s a crazy time and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t over reacted during the time spent social distancing. Chat Icon

My youngest is 14 - so far he stays up till 10ish on Xbox - I am not monitoring the time as much as long as school work is getting done. I am trying to keep some sort of schedule going. He is listening and adhering to staying home so I am happy about that!
