Am I being too paranoid?
i am interested in volunteering for a non-profit agency and received an application. on the application, there is a section for ss#. can i write, "will furnish via telephone"? i am not comfortable including my ss# info on the form but don't want to appear like a neurotic crazy person.
am i being sensible or paranoid?

Sensible! I applied for a store cc yesterday and when the girl asked for my SS#, I said I wouldn't say it aloud and wrote it down for her instead. You have to be so careful.

I don't think you're paranoid at all. I think you're being smart about it.
I understand why they want it if they have to run background checks, etc. (which they would need your approval for to do). Otherwise I would wonder why also.

Re: Am I being too paranoid?
I wouldn't give it to them unless I knew why they were asking for it. Is it possible that their paid staff fills out the same application and they need for payroll? I would ask too.

Re: Am I being too paranoid?
I wouldnt give them that information. what do they need it for? its volunteer work, and I dont know who is on that end of the phone either. with all this identity stolen going around I wouldnt hand it over so quickly. I would only do it if I was filing a tax form, otherwise for thier bills or company- NO WAY!

ditto Im curious about something, how do they run a background check on a SS? couldnt they do that with a license number? they are looking for a criminal background right? wouldnt a license have that information or even an non driver id number from dmv? and would running your SS would that put an inquiry on it, messing with your FICO score? im curious how this works, thanks.
