am i over-reacting? Baptism cake vent? long
We had DS' Baptism last week and a VERY well known baker on the island (and recommend ALL the time on this site) did our cake.
I requested a cross covered in baby blue fondant with a quilting design. Also, it would have flowers and say "God Bless and DS' name"... pretty standard!
So we go to the hall - the cake was there. It was WHITE fondant (which I paid extra for) and the quilting looked bad (also paid extra for this) - I could have done a better job myself. The lines didnt match up, it was deeper in some areas and hardly visible in others, uneven and there were guadges in the cake.
I didnt freak, i figured I would just call them and get my money back on the fondant and quilting. The cake tasted good!
So I called on Saturday as soon as we got home around 5. I was told that the owner would call me back within 24 hours. By Wednesday, still no call. I called again and was told someone would call me by wednesday night - no call Now im getting mad!
I just called again and spoke with the girl who did the cake. She told me she thought it looked great and the ticket didnt say "blue fondant." She was making ME feel badly for complaining about a cake that wasnt right nor what was it what I paid for! She told me that its near impossible to put quiltting detail on the side of a cross (why didnt they tell me that when I asked for it I wouldnt have requested it in that case).
She offered me credit on another cake? I just want my money back on the fondant and quiltting. Am I wrong? She made me feel awful for asking for money back! We have to go in there tomorrow to talk about it further

No you're not wrong. You should insist on a refund. You paid extra for items you didn't get.
And I wouldn't hesitate to name names - if you are unhappy with someone, they should know that word of mouth is the best (and worst) advertising.

You are not wrong. You paid for one thing and recieved something different. Of course you should be refunded for what they did not deliver on. In addition to the refund, they shuold ALSO offer you a credit towards a future purchase in order to keep a customer.

agreed! this happened with me with Alpine bakery for Logan's christening too. I got there and it looked like a girls cake - it was white with baby blue and purple designs/flowers. I actually waited at the bakery while they redid the icing.

I do not think you are wrong at all! They should have told you. Karin just curious - FM me who you used.
I had a grooms cake made for DH it was suppose to be his mustang and it looked like CRAP! the tires were flat and it looked nothing like it. I wanted to cry when i picked it up, but what could I do? I am so mad I never called them and did anything about it. I think you should speak with them again.

Re: am i over-reacting? Baptism cake vent? long
you are NOT over-reacting.... you paid for a service and it was not done to specifications. end of story.
demand your money back, letting them know full well that you will not accept a credit for a future cake, because you have no desire to use them again.
you are only asking for your money back on things that you were TOLD they could do and paid extra for. that part of the 'contract', they didn't complete, plain & simple, therefore you get your money back.
Good luck sweety!

wow gina, i would have demanded every dollar back.
you know what, on a cake like that, if they cant do it ... why do they take orders for it I understand that not everyone is "the cake boss" so dont take on more than you can handle.

Re: am i over-reacting? Baptism cake vent? long
I would go back in person and bring a picture of the cake with you so you can show them what you are talking about. I would ask to speak with the owner and tell them that you were very displeased with the final result and that you requested x,y and z and if they try to tell you that it wasn't going to look good - I would tell them that they should have notified you of that - or not agreed to make a substandard designed cake. I would not accept a credit for a new cake b/c your not sure after the way they handled this situation if you will like to return to them. I would say that the cake was good so you are not asking for your money back only a refund on the portion of their mistake which was whatever additional you paid for the fondant and the quilting (if they charge extra for that - I don't think my baker does). I personally wouldn't do it over the phone b.c it is much easier to ignore you over the phone than if you quietly go in during their busy business time. They are more likely to quietly help you if you don't make a scene but quietly approach it when their store is full - than over the phone where they don't have to really deal with you.

believe me I know ! There was so much going on wedding then honeymoon and closing on house as soon as we returned.
I agree with you, they should have said they wouldnt be able to do a good job. That wasnt even somewhat of a nice job - it was crap. the tires are not even the same one is flat to the car and one is sticking out past the car

Re: am i over-reacting? Baptism cake vent? long
If you are talking about Dortoni's I paid alot of $$$ once for a cake and it was horrible. I should have complained but didnt being it was a cake I had made for my rehearsal dinner the night before my wedding.
I will never go back there.
