birthday cake vent-

went to order olivia's cake on monday. the guy told me to call back today since he doesnt handle the cakes. i called back to verify my information and everything was ok and they said the cake girl is on vacation for 2 weeks and made my cake yesterday and froze it. *** why didnt someone tell me. i would have gotten it elsewhere.

its a canoli cake too so dont know hows its going to taste defrosted. is it normal to have cakes frozen like this?

Re: birthday cake vent-

I worked at a bakery when I was younger and they used to do this all the time. Always tasted the same to me.

It sounds like they didn't want to tell you that yesterday. They really should have told you that. That's a big deal to some people.

I actually do think that some bakery's do this. I've had it happen. We purchased a cake from the bakery and half way through the cake there was a frozen piece...well much colder than the actually cake. Chat Icon

I would cancel the order. I wouldn't want to have a cake that I ordered - made ahead and frozen.

Re: birthday cake vent-

I just talked with my sister who is a cake maker in FLorida. She says that as long as the cake is sealed, like in plastic wrap or something, it'll be fine. The only thing she said is that if there are colors on the cake, there's a chance of it it bleeding a bit when going from frozen to room temperature. I'd go see the cake and see if it's wrapped up. If they say they can't show you, then I'd go somewhere else.

ETA: Many cake makers make their cakes at least 3-5 days in advance, some make it longer. WHether they are on vacation or not.

I would go some place else. Unless it was Ice Cream I would never accept a frozen cake.

Re: birthday cake vent-

Most bakery cakes are preped in advanced and frozen. The only way the colors are going to run is if it is made with Whip cream and not buttercream. You would have never have known the difference if they didnt tell you. And if you go to another bakery you dont know that they are not doing the same thing. Most times the cakes are iced with the white or choc icing and borders on the cake then freeze them the day that they need the cakes they put the flowers or deco on them. Sad to say that is considered a fresh cake.

BTW ask any cake decorator a frozen cake is easy to decorate than one right out of the oven.
