Actually, I think most of the country has school, I think we're in the minority up here

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't have off for Columbus Day?
I think it's pretty exclusive to schools near cities...
I didn't have off when I worked out in the country. I feel for you though... I need my 3 day weekend right now... I hated that my old county didn't give us the day off!
ETA: I don't think those in NY realize how many more days they have off during the year than most of the country..
I get: Columbus Day (didn't get in my old district) Thanksgiving Winter Break MLK Jr. day (didn't get in my old district) President's day (didn't get in my old district) A week for spring break (got a 4 day weekend in my old district) Memorial Day
I think I miss Mid-winter break the most though.

Wow! I thought it was a National holiday that everyone had to have off.
We are lucky to get so many days off.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't have off for Columbus Day?
I have it off, but as a social studies teacher, I would be perfectly happy if we didn't have it off.
Columbus was a horrible guy who didn't discover anything, really. He is singlehandedly responsible for the near extinction of an entire race of indigenous peolples, as well as rape, murder, and slavery. He also has NOTHING to do with the history of the US.
I for one am sick of the heroification of historic figures like Columbus. He doesn't deserve it.

it's like you read my mind. i refuse to teach about columbus' "discovery" and "wonderful" treatment of the arawak. i'm not required to teach it, so i just ignore it.

I like to use the book "Lies My Teacher Told Me," when I teach about Columbus. They author of that book includes a whole chapter about the REAL story of Columbus, and about the actual "discovery" and settlement of the US. I HIGHLY recommend that book!!! Even the 9th graders love it!
