amazon returns

has their policy changed?
I have 2 prime orders that i want to return and they are charging me for the return shipping. Over the past 2+ years I was a prime member, I've never been charged to ship back a return

If the item doesn’t say free returns you usually always have to pay unless the item is damaged or defective in some way

It has to state Prime and Free Returns when you are buying it.
Not all prime items are free returns

thanks all! i had no idea they were not all free returns. I can ship it myself from work but I dont even have the option to return it on my own

depends if its Amazon. it may be fulfilled by Amazon but sold by someone else.

once was sold by amazon and was from 2 weeks ago; the other was sold by someone else but fulfilled by amazon.

I ended up having an online chat session with customer service asking to get an address so I can ship the items back on my own; and they ended up refunding me and telling me to donate the items. I thought that was so nice of them

I am a Prime member and the only time I had to pay for return shipping was when I had to return a music workbook.

So basically lie is what you are advocating?

I sell on Amazon and I sell through fulfillment. It pisses me off to no end when customers select “defective” or another reason like that just to get free returns. 90% of the items I get back in which a buyer claims is “defective” works perfectly fine. The only time returns were ever free on Amazon is if the listing stated “free returns”.

By advocating this behavior all you are doing is hurting small businesses. It’s bad enough Amazon’s liberal return policy allows buyers to return items in which we can no longer sell as new (taking a financial hit). But advocating this behavior we then get charged your return shipping and the original shipping which doesn’t get credited to us.

Once buyer did this on for consecutive orders to me. I showed Amazon my proof that he was abusing the returns system, I got him banned from buying on amazon. Took a lot of ******** to seller central but worth my time to end somebody who blatantly lied about return reason over and over.

I returned a few things on amazon. I needed approval first as to why I was returning, then they sent me a return label.

You are uninformed about how Amazon works behind the scenes. Let me explain it in more detail.

Amazon has two channels to sell. "Fulfillment by Amazon" and "fulfillment by Merchant".

Fulfillment by merchant is what you are likely referring to. People who sell fulfillment by merchant set their prices, process their own orders, ship from their own possession, set their own return policies, have to approve all returns and can deny returns if they choose. This is really no different than selling on eBay. Amazon only controls the product listing and payment processing. That's it.

Fulfillment by Amazon is when people who decide to sell on Amazon let Amazon handle everything from order processing, customer service, shipments and returns. This is how Amazon sells their own stock. If any third parties want to sell on Amazon through fulfillment, they have to send their stock to Amazon BEFORE any orders are made and before Amazon can accept any orders. So for example if I have 10 Xbox consoles I want to sell on Amazon, I have to ship Amazon my 10 items. Once Amazon gets them they are available to be sold and handled BY AMAZON. The only thing I do in this process is set the price. If a buyer places an order for one of these 10 Xbox consoles, Amazon handles the order processing, they handle shipping the item. If any customer service inquiries come in, you are dealing with Amazon. If any returns are to be made, you are dealing with Amazon. In fact it's TOS of the seller to not have ANY communication with the buyer because Amazon wants to control the process.

If 99.9% of items you buy on Amazon have free returns you are possibly buying baby/child items or apparel, two categories that frequently have free returns. And even with free returns the item must come back in new/unopened condition to qualify.

If you are lying about return reasons you are hurting everybody, especially any small businesses. Don't go telling people it's OK to lie about return reasoning because technically it's considered fraud. Amazon asks questions about the reason for a return FOR A REASON. Sellers do have recourse by reporting buyers who abuse this process.

As far as price matching is concerned, Amazon does not price match for anything other than TVs. If they are telling you to select something different, they are making a one time EXCEPTION to the rule. This doesn't give you the right to lie about every other return. The rule is they don't price match.

yeah soo many things that used to be free returns arent anymore.

amazon returns

The only items that have been free returns for the past decade have been some baby items, clothing, and shoes and they must be marked as "free returns" on the product detail page. Otherwise you have to pay for return shipping. You CAN use any carrier for your return, Customer Service can create an "any carrier" label for you that is generic and not prepaid.

Prime benefits have never included free returns, never in the decade have they either. Returns that are not considered Amazon's error have always charged for return shipping costs, which are minimal.

Everything Ave has said is also correct, except Amazon no longer price matches TVs either.

If a rep makes an exception for you then that is a one time deal. Calling in and asking for repeated exceptions, promos, etc will only result in you being labeled as an abuser of their generosity like that article mentions
