American Express Gift Cards
I see on the AMEX website there is a surcharge 3.99 per card, do you know if you buy it from CVS or some other outside vendor like that if the surcharge is higher??

The surcharge is printed on the card packaging, so I doubt it. I just bought one yesterday at Duane Reade and didn't pay extra.

I checked my receipt and I did pay $4.95 for a $50 card -- but that was the surcharge listed on the card package. Could the surcharge depend on the amount of the gift card?

I believe the surcharge on $25 cards is $3.95. If you have a gold card, Amex is waiving the surcharge when you order online. I bought five $25 cards and only had to pay $5.95 shipping (I received them in 2 days).
Also, they have a promotion now where you get a free $25 "Gadget Lovers" card when you buy 5 cards. (it's a mail in promotion). Great deal.

ETA: That 1st link only shows the $25 bonus card (I printed my redemption form there).  This link shows the waived surcharges.

GIft cards have a higher fee than gift check. HTe gift check has a 2.50 fee regardless of demoniation and the card it depends upon the amount

The surcharge is the reason I refuse to buy Amex Gift Cards. I think a surcharge is ridiculous!
