American Express Travelers Cheques
DH and I will be spending 2 weeks in Europe. What has been everyone's experience when using Travelers Cheques? We don't want to use our ATM cards because of the international transaction fees as well as the limits on withdrawing foreign funds each day.
I used Travelers Cheques when I lived in Europe during college but I don't know if it something widely used.
Any input?
TIA!

I always hated carrying those around... I believe they make a card now rather than having to carry the cheques around. We never use them when we go to Europe, we either change some $$ before we leave, or use our credit card for everything.

I used them before and hated it. You have to exchange them, etc...
I use my CC and use the ATM machines. It's not that much more expensive. I also use my CC for purchases. Just make sure to remember your pin#. A lot of store will require you to use a pin number either it's an ATM card or CC.
I never use my ATM card. I use my CC. I feel I have more "security" for theft, etc...

Re: American Express Travelers Cheques
lol we got the american express ones, for our wedding and we brought them on the HM and we couldn't use them. our first week was in Aruba and they said they can only be used in the US we thought they were crazy. week 2 we were on a cruise, figured it was a US crusie we'll use them there, they said since the ships registry wasn't in the US they couldn't accept them either. All the stops the ship made to different isalnds we couldn't use them there either, so stay away from the american express ones!

Don't bother, just get some cash before you leave, and use the cash machines. In my eyes, the fee is more worthwhile than the hassle of using travellers cheques. They are outdated and there are cash machines everywhere. You will also get a better rate of exchange with your credit cards. The are ATM's everywhere in Europe, you won't have trouble finding them.
