If this is true, I'd rather teach my child about those less fortunate by having them give $95 or their time to a charity that helps homeless children rather then by buying a baby doll that is pretend homeless! That is a learning experience! Profiting off home less children...where does it end???
You make an excellent point. I would hope that some of the proceeds from this doll are at least going to charity.
I agree with this. It's unconscionable really to sell a "homeless" doll for $95, especially if there is nothing to be learned from it or done about it. this is completely tasteless.
I am still waiting for HIV or Herpes Barbie.

Re: American Girl's Newest Doll is Homeless
I think there is more to the story. From what I understand American Girl doll had a story (and I think maybe even a movie) and focused on a character building doll to encourage girls to stand up against bullying. The main character, Chrissa, met a girl named Gwen Thompson who was homeless & was being picked one.
Chrissa stood up against the "mean bees", etc. I think the homeless character has taken on a life of its own & had its own fan club so they're producing the doll now on request.
I see the irony in spending $95+ for a "homeless" doll but don't think it is as simple as they created a homeless doll for people to buy. It makes me wonder what my parents thought of us adopting cabbage patch dolls .

It's not the doll that I find depressing. It's the homeless problem in our country.
I guess if it opens up some young people's eyes towards helping the population, it's a good thing. American Girl should consider putting some profits toward Habitat for Humanity.

She used to come with a tear on her eye because she was sad.
Once you took her in and loved her the tear would go away - I guess your parents peeled it away, who knows
And then you could buy her new clothes to get rid of the potato sack.
This was one of my aunt favorite dolls as a child.
I agree, those eyes are a bit much

this is why I have such a problem with it. it's a great thing to bring awareness to the homeless situation...but I guess I feel that without some kind of good faith donation toward local and national charities relating to the problem, it's exploitation.
a really great thing would be for each doll to come with a different charitable cause...so multiple organization could get a piece...Habitat, City Harvest, City Meals on Wheels, etc.
even a 10% donation would be great, between the doll and the accessories, it would do at least SOMETHING. help SOMEONE.

I agree with all of this, but I do actually see some value in producing this doll. My niece has a couple of these dolls and from what I can see, and from what my sister tells me, the girls get really engrossed in the stories of these American Girls. I think if a little girl had a doll like this, it could teach her empathy for others and educate her about a huge social problem that often is ignored.
I do think the company should donate some of the profits to charitble causes. As I have said before, I am interested to see how this sells, but also how they market it and whether or not they will make any sort of donation.

My sister also said I was found in garbage can, and ofcourse when I asked my mother if it was true she said yes. Even though I knew they were lying I still cried. They also told me my mother was Tina Turner casue of my crazy afro hair.

Does anyone else see the irony of the homeless doll selling for $95? I know they are all expensive, but if these are supposed to be doll that girls can relate to, I think they should have a lower price point. Otherwise, they are "sociologically accurate" dolls only for people with a high socioeconomic status!
ETA: I have the feeling, unfortunately, that those who can afford these doll probably will not be choosing the homeless one for their child. I hope I'm wrong!
THANK YOU!! My thoughts exactly!!!

Re: American Girl's Newest Doll is Homeless
As others have stated, unless this doll's proceeds (some at least) are going towards charities that work with the homeless population, the whole idea infuriates me
