Amnio - To have it or not?
I was going to have the amnio done. It's not mandatory but I wanted it because I want to make sure the baby is OK (no downs, etc.).
But I'm nervous because of horrible stories I've heard...and I'm scared to have it done now.
Can you share with me why you are or are not having the amnio done, and why?
ETA: I am asking becuase I'm worried that my baby might have Fragile X, Spina Bifida or open skull (forgot the name)...all of which run in my family. I'm also worried about Downs too - which does not run in my family but its still a concern.
Fragile X (especially in males) can be horrible. Spina Bifida (ineither sex) is a horrible thing. My cousin died at a few hours old because she was born with an open skull.
So, I'm worried about those things...and I wanted to make the most informed decision possible about the amnio.

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
they can do blood test for down syndrome. the only reason for an amnio is if difficulities or something shows up on a sono or blood work. you can miscarry from amnio its a large needle going throught the amniotic sac and if it pierces the sac and cannot seal you could loose the baby. if the baby had downs or not would you keep it. you should think of that. i would never take the chance unless its was very necessary. does your family have a history of downes?

It's definitely a decision only you could make.
I was over 35 when I had my daughter. I didn't have the amnio because the rest of my results weren't indicators of Downs (measurements, AFP, etc). Now that I know we have a history of a chromosome disorder (not downs - another one), I would think about it...but I'd get make DH get a blood test for it if we decided for baby #3.

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
Are 35 or near 35? If not, I don't really see a reason why you should have it unless blood tests or the AFP test have come back indicating that it would be recommended.
Most doctors will not recommend it if it's not necessary. It can be risky and if you don't have a indication as to why you would need it, why take the risk?
My aunt who was an OB/GYN began both her pregnancies well after age 35 and she refused the amnio in both PGs. Her babies are happy and healthy.

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
A friend of mine who was carrying twins recently had an amnio done, against her better wishes but at her doctors insistence, and lost both babies within 24 hours, before that they were healthy. I would definitely not reccomend it if you don't have to have it.

That's so sad. I can't imagine how hard that would be to go through. I'll keep your friend in my prayers.

That is awful I heard that there a re a lot of false positives. My friend had it done and it came back positive for downs, and her baby did not have it

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
I'm not 35 or over so I dont have to have it done. My Ultrascreen results will be in in a day or two and we can go from there. I can't stand the thought of putting my baby at risk so maybe I will opt not to have the amnio, unless my other test results warrant it. I could never forgive myself if something happened!

not to start drama here, but this statement bothered me a little.
while i agree with you in a sense that any mother would love their child regardless of an abnormality, you went so far as to imply that IF someone were faced with receiving positive results for downs, that they'd continue the pregnancy. it is an extremely personal, emotional choice, and i don't think anyone can even begin to imagine what that would be like unless you're in those shoes. There ARE absolutely many many parents who bring children into the world knowing full well that their child has downs, and they do go on to lead somewhat normal lives. But, there are certainly different degrees of downs, from mild to severe cases. and not everyone has the means to raise a child with such a disability, let alone one with a severe case. (not to mention quality of life issues.) I am NOT an expert on this subject, nowhere near it. But when i was faced with the possibility of my baby having downs, i did some research. ultimately, we did decide to have the amnio, and by the grace of God, we found out we were having a healthy baby girl. MrsJ, if your tests do not warrant an amnio, i would not have the test done. jmo.

I agree 100% about the fact that it is a extremely personal, emotional choice. It's something that I wouldn't feel comfortable discussing on the boards. I think its something that each woman/couple has to decide for her/themselves.
There are several defects that run in my family which would warrant me to have the amnio, but I can wait until I get the results from my other tests before making any decisions. I pray about this all the time - that everything will be OK.

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
I did not at the ultra screen they explain the percentage that you will have a baby with downs, if you do the test it may cause a false positive and may lead you to believe that you have a higher chance then you do to have a baby with downs. So for me, I had so much else going on with my cerclage and on bedrest and preterm labor that I did not want to be pricked and probed anymore.. Good Luck

ok then lets not cause drama. it was a question that didnt have to be answered it was just stating that why take a chance but thats everyones individual choice. if your not comfortable with people posting questions then dont post a thread called amnio to have it or not if your going to be offended by peoples feedback.

When did I say I was offended?
I came here for input - looking for things that would possibly help me make the decision of what to do. So far this post has been very helpful.

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
We decided not to have the amnio done because the ultrascreen results and AFP testing came back normal and being under 35 with a good family history we opted not to go forward with it. Our doctor told us everything looked fine and suggested to not go forward with it either.
Its definitely a personal decision and one who only the mother and father can answer - i know many people that have had the amnio done - but i don't think any different of them. Do whats best for you and always believe in your decision - im sure it will be the right one and your baby will be just fine

mrs j I wasnt talking about you. mrs erod is the one who said she didnt want to bring the drama. i wanted to clarify.
mrs j its ultimately your own decision and only you and your dh will know whats approprate for your situation.
if it was me in your shoes and i had to decide my answer would be no. but im not you and i hope that your baby is healthy and you dont have to go thorugh this. best of luck to you.

1. didn't have to be answered, but i had every right to respond to...just like anyone else. 2. I didn't post the thread to begin with. 3. had you just stated 'why take the chance?' would be one thing...but you prefaced it with a statement that TO ME, was very presumptious.

Re: Amnio - To have it or not?
Are you over 35? What would you do with the results? meaning would you terminate? (you don't have to answer here just something for you to think about). I was like you and totally paranoid about everything and I mean every little possible thing.
We did the ultra screen and got great results, then did the AFP only (not the quad) to screen for spina bifida and had our level II which again was great. I had to convince myself that this was enough positives to assure me that odds were we would have a perfectly healthy baby. Of course its not a gurantee but it had to be enough for me. Amnio's have a risk to them of miscarriage, 1:200 I believe to unless your screen came back with worse odds than that I wouldn't have it done, especially not with all you went through to get pregnant.
But ultimately that's a decision only you and your DH can make.

first of all, noone 'told you' that you were bringing drama!!! get over yourself already. your question was not an open ended one, but a presumptious one. monkeybride was alot more tactful with her words!! and just for the record...your 'real opinion' came across quite clearly in your OP.
eta: and i got quite a few fm's agreeing with me.

its funny becuase i got about 5 fms saying that you always bring drama and think your always right. mrs j wanted everyones opinion and i gave mine. stop taking away from her post and making it about yourself. dont you see that she edited her first question. you must be a very bored person or have alot of time on your hands to be so critial of everyone and if monkeybride worded her comments differently thats great i agree with what she wrote. next time i will send you my comments for approval before posting.
