Re: Amnio at 38 weeks

This is just my opinion, but that IS INSANE for the Drs to suggest. Especially since the weight can be off up to two pounds either way.

My Drs, with my last my Drs try to convince me to be induced THREE times in the last 2 weeks bc "it was a big baby" and you know what, I said hell no, if the baby is too big to make it out we can cross that bridge on delivery day but right now, he/she isn't ready.

My last ended up being 8.13, and yes, was big but you know what, DC came out, no problem, at 40w 5d and Im tiny. 4'11" and no hips to speak of.

Honestly, if you aren't comfortable with it, you are WELL within your rights to say no, and thats that.

IMO, there is no reason to take risks like that just bc the baby could be big.

Re: Amnio at 38 weeks

agree with the other posts!! Horrified!! That dr does not want a thanksgiving baby.

I personally would not do an amnio. I don't understand why they would need to at38 weeks. my first was born at 35 weeks and his lungs were perfect?! I know thats not everyone but you are certainly full term. Amnio is invasive and comes with risks - why add risks at the end pregnancy - you are so close.

I was induced for medical reasons but they never did a lung check first. couldn't they induce you without the amnio? I know inducing has its risks too though and the weight could be off.

C-section is not ideal but whats most important is bring baby out and home as safe as possible.

sorry you are going through this. Chat Icon

At 34 wks they said baby was over 6pounds. She was delivered at 36wks 4 pounds 5 oz.

There is no reason for an amni for 1 at 38wks. That is just crazy and it has a risk associated with it. Infection and possible risks for baby. Not only that but at 38wks your babies lungs are developed. I would say no way since they just redid the "rules" and said to wait on sections until 39wks unless needed. Tell him thanks but no thanks you aren't comfortable with an amno and induction for no reason. I would just wait and go into labor natural.

Honesty it sounds like he is just trying to reduce HIS risk of having to be at the hospital for thanksgiving. Even if the sono is correct and the baby will be in the 9 pound range that in no way means you can't go naturally. My friend is tiny and she just had a 9 1/2 pound baby naturally.

Re: Amnio at 38 weeks

I was induced at 38 weeks for medical reasons (no amnio). I ended up with a c-section after about 24 hours. I had to be induced. Personally, I wouldn't induce early because of size. Growth sonos can be way off and inductions can lead to more intervention, especially c-sections.

def def def DO NOT do an amnio and induce based solely on estimate size!! esp if you dont have GD or anything that would put you at higher risk for a larger than average baby.
our bodies are made to deliver the size baby we grow. you really really do not need intervention assuming all of your other stats are normal (like BP, glucose..etc). i think its absolutely insane to intervene with a perfectly healthy pregnancy at this point.

OK this IMO and you have to do what you feel is best, but if I was in your situation, I would not do it. If they wanted to induce me just because the baby was weighing too big, I would say no. People deliver large babies vaginally all the time. My sister and I were both over 9 lbs. Plus, those growth sonos are not completely accurate.

I'm very against interventions though and like to let birth and labor happen naturally, unless there is a serious medical concern. To me, having a large baby is not a medical concern, and I'd rather wait and let things happen naturally.

Is there any other reason they want to induce or only because they feel the baby is too big?

Again, I have strong feelings on this. You have to go with what YOU are comfortable with and what you feel is right.

I agree! I was told by my dr when I was pregnant with my DS (who was measuring big). That they would not induce me early just because the baby is big. The dr said I would have a greater chance of a vaginal delivery with a big baby if I went into labor naturally. You are at a greater risk for a c/s with an induction. I wound up going past my due date and had to be induced and wound up with a c/s. he was 9lb 9oz.
And also just because the baby is measuring big on sono doesn't always mean much. My friend was told her DD was measuring 9lb 10oz. She delivered 3 days later and baby was 8lb 5oz. So you never know!!

I agree with the other posts- I def would not do an amnio at this point!! I am having a scheduled CS at 37 weeks due to placenta previa. I was VERY concerned about her lungs being developed and questioned my dr about this. Both my OB and my high risk OB were confident at 37 weeks her lungs would be developed. They said its about a 10% chance or less that this would be an issue. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
