Amnio questions

My regular OB is doing mine and as the date draws near, I'm beginning to have all these questions pop up in my mind.

I was very nervous about having it done in the first place. Then when my doc told me to call the high risk doc and ask if they can do it instead, it kind of worried me. I began to wonder if he isn't really comfortable doing it, and should I not do it with him? Or is he pushing me to have somebody else do it in case something goes wrong, he is not to blame.

I was going to call the girl in his office who schedules all the procedures and ask how often he does them. She told me when I was scheduling the appt. that they do them on Mon, Wed & Thurs so it sounds like they do alot of them, but I'm just not sure. One article I read said that a doc who is "competent" will do at least 50 a year. My doc has a pretty busy practice so I can't see him doing less than that, but still I worry. So if you can give me any of these answers I'd really appreciate it.

Anybody who had one, were you completely confident with your doctor doing it?

Did your own OB do it or did they send you elsewhere for it?

Did you do research first on who you were going to have do it?

Do you actually know of anybody who ended up having a miscarriage after it?

TIA!

Re: Amnio questions

I'm having mine tomorrow, they are sending me to the Maternal & Fetal Medicine practice, which is the "high risk" Dr. My OB doesn't do them.

I've never had one, but I'll report back tomorrow.

I went to Madonna prenatal. My OB does not do them. The Dr. I had does them all the time.

Did you do research first on who you were going to have do it?

I was reassured that the Dr who did it, was VERY good. And he was.

Do you actually know of anybody who ended up having a miscarriage after it?

Your chance of miscarriage are MUCH smaller than people make it to be. I had mild cramping the day after. They told me what to expect. I literally was on bedrest for the 2 following days. They will tell you to take it easy. I did not want to take a chance and do too much.

Also do not eat before you have your amnio. Baby will be calmer.

I was very confident with the dr who did mine - but he was high risk - he was one of the few in the office I did trust.

No it was not an option. If your OB recommended going elsewhere to your HR I think if it was me I would b.c I would assume there is a reason he is referring me (although I would have asked WHY he wasn't comfortable doing it.

I am very familiar with the dr who did mine on a professional level otherwise I would have asked a lot of questions. I would ask the dr how many he does a month, year and if any of them have resulted in miscarriage.

I don't personally know anyone who had a rupture and I know a lot of people who had them. But there was a girl on here a few years ago whose sack ruptured after one - you could probably do a search to see what happened. Overall it is actually a rather safe test (safer than the CVS) but it does carry some risk. I would definitely have another amnio if it was every indicated without second thought.

I think if you are not comfortable or your gut is telling you to go elsewhere maybe you should listen to your instinct. I will say a HR dr is more likely to do more amnios only b.c they have mostly patients who have medical reasons to have them.

ONE MILLION PERCENT
Did your own OB do it or did they send you elsewhere for it?

It was done in my OB's office. My OB did it while the perinatoligist ran the UBER-High Tech sonogram machine and told him EXACTLY where to put the needle. So essentially, I had two doctors do it. They have a perinatologist do Ultrascreens, Level 2's and Amnios REGARDLESS of if you are high risk or not.
Did you do research first on who you were going to have do it?

Nope. I felt I knew enough from personal and family experience. I felt it was better to ask people who actually HAD the procedure rather than internet research. My mother had one at 6 months along in 1970 with NO sonogram. The risk factors were MUCH higher. She then had to have a second one because they did not get enough fluid. My sister had one as well. I was fully confident in the abilities of my doctors and the better technology of today. I also felt that the benefits, in my case, were worth the risks.
Do you actually know of anybody who ended up having a miscarriage after it?

No. I also asked the rates of m/c's of my doc's office and they were lower than any other average I saw anywhere else.

It is VERY important to rest afterwards. If you think you will need two days afterwards, take 3.

Re: Amnio questions

Anybody who had one, were you completely confident with your doctor doing it? - I was confident I was in the best possible hands

Did your own OB do it or did they send you elsewhere for it? - No, my OB's practice they don't do sonos or amnios there. I get all my sonos done at a Maternal Fetal Medicine practice. The Dr. there did my Amnio.

Did you do research first on who you were going to have do it? - No, but I was able to meet the Dr. who performed my Amnio and talk with him a couple of days prior.

Do you actually know of anybody who ended up having a miscarriage after it? - No. My OB who knew my initial position on having an Amnio done, told me that in all her years of practice she personally has never seen that happen. (I don't know if she was telling the truth or trying to make me feel better, I'd like to believe she was telling me the truth).

Re: Amnio questions

My regular OB did mine and it was fine-- absolutely no complications-- I relaxed the rest of the day and took the next day off and rested. Almost no cramping and a week later I came in to hear the heartbeat!
