Amnio tomorrow....UPDATED!!!!!

So nervous that its going to hurt. For those who've had one (and I'll be fming those that I already know have had one Chat Icon ):

Was it painful?
What was recovery like?
Did you find out the sex through the sonogram- or do I have to wait for the results along with the genetics info?

Thx for any advice, insight, and hugs.

Re: Amnio tomorrow....

I had one and I would be happy to answer each and every question as you have asked them. Feel free to FM me with any questions.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that everyone's experience is different and what one woman experiences, another may not.

Was it painful?

For me, it was painful but the reason was because after a huge weight loss from many years ago, my skin was not tight - rather taut - and the needle did not go in as easily as it may have for someone who was not previously stretched out. Imagine trying to pop a balloon that is half deflated - fun times.

What was recovery like?

I was told that I should rest for 24 hours. I rested for 48. I should have rested a lil longer as I tried to do too much too soon.

Did you find out the sex through the sonogram- or do I have to wait for the results along with the genetics info?

My amnio was conducted at my doctor's office. Two doctors actually do it. A perinatologist runs the high-tech sonogram machine and instructs the OB/GYN EXACTLY where to put the needle. As the doc was doing the sonogram, I asked her if she was able to determine gender and both she and the nurse simultaneously said "Oh its a girl." THEY could see exactly what they needed to see to make that determination though DH and I couldn't. DH would not allow us to spill the beans on gender until we got confirmation with the results.

I am going to add my own question for you:

Would you do it again for your next pregnancy?

In a heartbeat. The peace of mind I got from having the amnio was worth the risk as far as I was concerned. I am also NOT a high risk patient and each one of my blood tests, sonograms and screenings before the amnio put me at a DECREASED risk for everything. Even still, I had my reasons for doing it and I trusted my doctors, my DH and myself that we all made the right choice for this child.

Best of luck!

Re: Amnio tomorrow....

My pleasure. Im just tired of seeing negative posts about the amniocentesis. For some people, it gives them a huge amount of peace and I know for myself, that had I flip-flopped over doing it, I would never have been able to enjoy this part of my pregnancy at all.

Re: Amnio tomorrow....

hi,

i had an amnio back in january, because i was in a certain risk catergory... undefined, but the doctors recommended it. (not based on tripple screen).

Anyway, an amnio is such a personal decision, and it was hard for us to make, but i can say that once we got the results, it took a huge weight off my shoulders.

to answer your questions:

it wasn't exactly painful. more like a sting then weird pressure. the area felt a little funny afterwards, but just for a little bit.

i was told to stay off my feet for 24 hours, but i went overboard and didn't do much for about 3 days. (and if you include sitting on the couch for the weekend, then i guess 4 days).

i didn't ask to find out the sex then, because i figured it would be way more accurate from the amnio results so i figured i'd wait.

i'd say just take it easy afterwards, and you'll be fine. don't worry.

Re: Amnio tomorrow....

Well- we're back! It wasn't bad- although it did hurt a little more than I was expecting. At first I felt the sting of the needle, but the weird pressure/ache in my uterus was unexpected- I totally jumpedChat Icon

And without further ado......... I am pleased to announce that Madelyn will *likely* have a little Chat Icon .Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am over the moon- but poor DH is a teensy bit disappointed I think. I know he wants a son. Secretly I'm glad because if this baby WERE a boy, I think we'd be done (and I secretly want 3).

The bad thing is- we CANNOT agree on girl names AT ALL......
