I didn't, and I'm going to be 35 just about right after the baby's born.
Go for your nuchal translucency screen (ultrascreen) and see what they say first. That's at about 13 weeks.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
I will be 35 when DC#2 is born and my Dr also brought up an amnio...but he said not to even think about it until the regular testing comes back. If there is cause for worry there, if the numbers are too low, then consider it.
Otherwise...there's no reason.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
It's a very personal decision. If all of your tests are fine (NT scan, AFP/Quad Triple Screen) then I would skip it. I was 37 when I got pregnant with DD. We were adament about NOT having the Amnio done as it wouldn't have swayed our decision to keep the pregnancy if g-d forbid something was wrong. In the end, my AFP results were elevated from the NT scan for Down Syndrome and my Level II showed DD having 3 "soft" markers for Downs as well.
After alot of crying and discussing, we decided to go ahead with the Amnio for our peace of mind. I couldn't have gotten through the next 22 weeks without knowing what we would be facing.
Don't let your Dr. pressure you about an Amnio if you don't want it!

Ya i wouldnt stress it too much until you get other tests results back.... if there is no need to disturb your body like that than don't, but if the doctor comes back and says I suggest you do it based on results, then do it.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
I did the screenings with DD#1 and spent my whole pregnancy worrying. Even when she was BORN, I was still worrying.
I opted for the amnio with #2 and am glad I did. My chances of miscarriage were lower than my chances for having a child with chromosomal abnormalities- so it was a better option for me.
I work with disabled children, many with chromosomal abnormalities and I wanted to be prepared.
This is a very personal decision but if you want more info, I'd be happy to fm you.

Really? I understood the nuchal was very time sensitive and only accurate if performed at the right time (11.5wks - 14wks). ETS: My MD office wouldn't let me schedule for even a day before this time b/c it does make a difference.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
First, I'm not sure you are getting the NT at 9.5 weeks, that's very early and there is no nuchal skin at that point. I had a sonogram at 10 weeks and then had to go back at 12 because there was no nuchal fold.
As far as the amnio, it's a very personal decision. I am 43, so it's a very high risk for us...when we did the NT, my results came back 1 in 7 due to the measurements, but the AFP showed the results drop to 1 in 40, we had the level II last week and there were no markers at all so we decided against the amnio. I wasn't going to terminate anyway so the amnio wouldn't have changed anything.

Are you sure you are getting the NT test at 9.5 weeks? I thought that the earliest you could have the test is 11.5 weeks and the latest 13 weeks because the markers they are looking for are not present until then. I would call your obgyn to confirm the dates of your test (blood and ultra sound).

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
It's really a personal decision and they can't perform an amnio till i believe about 16 weeks anyways so i would wait and see how the results of your other tests come out. I had an amnio done at 20 weeks based on the results of the AFP test and sono years ago.

Unless something came back in the ultrascreen I am not sure I would do it. But I think it is more a personal decision.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
I think this is something different- from what I understand, the NT is like a sono where they take measurements of the fetus' skin folds, not a blood test.
To answer your question, we skipped it b/c it would have just caused me to worry, and we really couldn't imagine terminating no matter what. I kinda regretted skipping it though b/c it is another chance to see the baby- we haven't seen the baby since 9 weeks and that's been tough!

Ahh, the finger prick test (4 drops of blood) can be done slightly before the ultrasound, but I think it has to be done at 11.5 weeks. The place where I go will send you the test to do at home so you can bring it with you to the ultrasound.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
I just had one on Tuesday, not so patiently awaiting the results now.
I had it because my ultrascreen came back with a higher-than-normal risk for Down's. I could not go the rest of my pregnancy with that 'what if' in my head so we did it.
For us termination was not / is not entirely off the table, depending on what comes back but even if it were, I would have done the amnio. We would then have the rest of the pregnancy to mourn the 'normal' child we thought we were going to have and prepare ourselves, our home and our family for what lies ahead.
Good luck with your decision

I agree. Don't do it unless they see something to be concerned about.

The finger prick can be done before 11.5 weeks. I did mine about 2 weeks before the NT scan, which I had done at exactly 12 weeks. This way I had the results immediately after the sono was done.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
It is a very personal decision. I will be 34 when baby arrives, but, my Ultrascreen and AFP came back showing a "risk". After much thinking DH and I decided, we are keeping the baby no matter what, so, we opted no amnio. Went for my 20 week sono and everything came back normal. There was a soft marker on the heart and the dr. at the center I have my sonos done at said the amnio would have been riskier. The marker on the heart may just be a calcium deposit and/or may just disappear on its own. I have another sono on Tues. and I'm hoping and praying all still looks good.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
We did not do any testing and certainly not amnio. There are very high rates of false positives with twins. Like Gerty said we did not plan on terminating so we didn't do any of that. All my sonos were normal

I'm 41 and opted NOT to do the amnio ... my NT numbers were way better than for my age, the 16w genetic scan/quad screen was perfect as was the Level II.

Re: Amnio, who did it? I dont know if i should.
its a personal decision...
for the catholic faith we dont abort so for me i didnt want to take the risk from having it done..
also, the statistics from these tests never guarantee your baby will or wont be normal its just a percentage chance so that was another reason for me not to take the test. We did have the Nuchal Test done at 12 weeks which is non invasive

Actually, the amnio is the only definitive test you can take...you could also do a CVS test anytime before 12 weeks, which is also definitive. Both tests take flud from the womb or placenta and test it for any genetic defects. The sonograms and blood tests are all statistical tests and have no guarantees...that is why some people opt for the CVS or amnio - so they have definitive answers. Just want to make sure the right info is out there...
