I was just at the nail salon getting a manicure. I normally do my own but wanted Shellac this time.
I never get a pedi anymore since having a fungus that still haunts me years later. My big toenail will never be the same IMO.

So I'm at the station right next to the pedicure chair and there is a woman getting a pedicure with a CLEAR case of nasty fungus on not one, but several toenails. I know what it looks like as I battled it for years.

Now when I had my fungus I NEVER got a pedi. Not only was I embarrassed of how bad it looked, but more importantly, I wouldn't want to spread it.

And what kills me is, they never turn you away in these places. They could care less if you have a staph infection, they will take your money.

Then after she leaves, I watch and they took a dirty looking kitchen sponge, and a small squirt of some green liquid - the same antiseptic type stuff they spray on your hands when getting a manicure- clearly not strong enough to clean with if they are using it on your skin.
She did a quick swipe of the sponge- not more than a few seconds, hosed it down with a little water, and done.

Yup. I refuse to get my nails done by any place...I don't care if it's a shithole or a fancy spa, five bucks or fifty...the inconsiderate patrons and staff that don't clean well are enough to keep me far, far away.

I had tons of nail issues while on chemo...they're clearing up now, but my nails had fluid undernearth from getting loose off the nailbed, I had to wear band aids over many of my fingernails for over a month, they were sore, they were thick in some areas and thin in others - this is after I kept ice packs on them while the chemo was administered, which is supposed to help keep these issues at bay...I followed my doctors' instructions to keep them clean and they're coming back in well now. I swore after going through that (they were all terribly painful), that I would never step foot in a nail place again because of the risk of fungus and who knows what else.

I read something similar on this board about patrons seeing people with fungus. I seldom get mani/pedis any more but I was going to treat myself to one to start the summer. Think I'm too grossed out to do it now. Thanks for sharing, it's always a good reminder.

I have to say I am truly shocked I have never (knock wood!) gotten any foot fungus or anything from a nail salon. I have gone for a pedi every two weeks for well over 10 yrs, to 100's of places. Are people prone to it?

My SIL has had it a couple times.

Im with you....I got a toenail fungus from a pedi that took YEARS to clear up. In all that time, I NEVER EVER EVER went for a pedi. Even now, I have only been like twice since I finally got rid of it bc I am terrified of it happening again.

Um gross. This is why I don't go to nail salons. My mom got a fungus the first and last time she ever got a pedicure.

Reading these stories on here has made me completely stop pedis (i do it at home). I was going maybe 1x/ 2 months for mani, but im going to stop and do my own. Just not worth it. I do my toes better than my nails but i guess i'll just have to keep practicing.

I posted a while ago about seeing a wart on the woman's thumb who was giving me a manicure and i freaked.

I only really go when I receive a giftcard.

I've gotten good at doing them myself and that $$$ really adds up.

So Gross!!!!!! Thats why I have not gone back!! I went to a nail salon I got a fungus on my big toe and the nail fell off. My new nail is still growing back and its not the same. I will never go again!! I have a gift card and i feel bad but I will not use it. Those machines should be bleached..and taken apart. If no one is cleaning the filters and the jets I cant imagine the germs that lurk in there.

That is so gross. It is both the woman and the salons fault. She should know better, and so should the salon. They should have refused her.My DH has toe fungus, and I don't touch or use the same nail file as him.

I usually don't get the pedicures because I know they don't wash it well enough and I get grossed out easily.

I never got a fungus from a nail place but once when I went for a manicure I got a horrible infection. I ended up on really strong antibiotics for 2 weeks after. Never let them cut my cuticles again after that. Oh and of course I never went back to that place ever again!

It's almost like you have to bring your own tools and your own Clorox and wash the sink yourself.

My husband got me a spa pedicure manicure thing for my birthday last year. I went and did it and a few weeks later had a nasty black fungus under my nail. This was last AUGUST. I am just getting rid of it now. Side note-I used blue listerine soaks. I havent gotten my toes done since. I do want to get one o those foot grater things since its the only one that works!

You've really got to make sure you go to a clean place, most of these nail places are not.

As a sore note are you sure she had fungus? I only ask because I have this on my toe and skin on my hands too. My podiatrist tested the nail for fungus but itcame back negative. It's embarrassing but there's no way to get rid of it if it's psoriasis

I've seen the samething and since I saw it I've had one pedicure. That was 2 years ago I think. I actually posted about it.

That's so gross.. I don't understand how they can give the pedi. I could never touch a fungus anything.

I still can't give up my Pedis.. I have no patience and shaky hands so it's a pain for me to do it.
