Sonia, on principle I cannot buy this magazine but if you do, I am curious as to how Kanye will explain himself as to why he (or the magazine) chose to depict himself like this

no need to read a lame article to find out why:

Isn't his album called Jesus Walks?
Does that offend anyone or is just the imagery of Kanye with the Crown of Thorns that people find offensive? Just wondering.

I really don't know his albums or songs ...
aside from a few that is..

I am not offended just by the title Jesus Walks..since i don't know what that means as far as this album is concerned...

if it is a reference to comparing himself to Christ...YES i find that offensive..

But i see that pic ....well i am just sickened since i know that it is in fact a direct comparison being made

Apparantly- this isn't a new thing for Kanye West. So maybe this IS just about him.

Kanye West Teams With Jacob The Jeweler For New Line
By Nolan Strong and Jigsaw
Date: 4/17/2004 1:00 PM

Kanye West has a passion for Jesus Christ evident in his song “Jesus Walks” and now the religious figure can symbolically walk with the producer/rapper at all times.

West and famed Jacob The Jeweler have joined forces to produce a line of “religious-themed” jewelry, which includes diamond studded Jesus pendants.

Presently, the pair released a lavish Jesus piece for potential consumers to view. The gold piece features a crown of diamond-set thorns on Jesus’ head, two sparkling diamond eyes and red rubies that form tears flowing from the Savior’s eye.

Diamonds and other gems are sprinkled throughout Jesus’ hair, beard and face to complete the shiny work of art. [To see exclusive pictures, click here.]

West and the jewelry merchant have yet to announce a name for the line, but such details will be made public in the near future.

In the song “Jesus Walks,” which spawned the union, West reveals his need for Jesus in his life. “God show me the way because the devil [is] trying to break me down.”

Jacob Arabo is the jeweler of choice among Hip-Hop celebrities. Arabo, a Russian immigrant, recently signed a licensing deal with the NBA for the rights to place the NBA logo and all 29 teams on his famous Five Time Zone watches.

After founding his company in 1981, Jacob’s fortunes took off in the mid-1990’s when Faith Evans found his New York-based store as she was seeking jewelry for her upcoming CD cover.

Later, she returned with her husband, the late Notorious B.I.G., who became a loyal customer and recommended the jewelers creations to numerous high profile friends in the entertainment business.

Yeah, I am curious too, or maybe he's just doing it to get people to buy it & mention nothing about the cover. If that is the case I will be writing to Rolling Stone. I would like to know why he feels so compelled to make this comparison.

This whole idea is such an oxymoron, I don't even know where to begin. If Jesus threw the moneychangers out of the temple, I think he'd have a thing or two to say to Kayne.

I am all for freedom of the press, but this cover is over the top and I agree with Felicia - if his music was so great, he wouldn't have to seek all the controversy.

Is the magazine in newsstands now? I'm sure Kanye will lose many fans. The Jesus walks song was liked by many teens who have strong religious beliefs...I think this cover will only offend many people and I'm sure he will lose fans.

Re: and this mag cover is ok

Kanye is very spiritual, I love his CDs. I don't think the cover is tasteful at all, but I am not offended.

He actually has a very different view on life. He was once in a club and shots were fired, he was scared, but then went to church to ask forgiveness from God for being afraid to go home. He is very outside the box.

IMO it may or not have been his decision to pose that way but its all about shock value......

I do however think its tasteless. NO ONE should wear a crown of thorns for entertainment value.

Curious...does this apply to movies as well or just this particular form of artistic expression?

for me...it was his wearing the crown, comparing himself and his life to that of Christ's that bothered me most...

I think actors that portay Christ and wear a thorned crown in movies is different...they are telling Christ's story..

I think wearing it in a movie is fine - but the fact that he is not in a movie but on a magazine cover comparing himself (like Red said above) to Christ thinking that he is somehow worthy of wearing it is what bothers me.
