but that is the point....by NOT allowing kids to dress up, the school IS enforcing the beliefs of a FEW on everyone
I think it is riduculous.

This is my opinion, not a response to anyone else's post, just speaking my mind so please don't flame me if you disagree.
I just think its sad that kids are not being exposed to all holidays, traditions, beliefs! And why? because a few people complain that their holiday didn't get equal attention or because other kids in the class don't celebrate that....come on! Thats just rediculous. Give kids the opportunity to learn about everything! Including things I know nothing about and can not expose them to at home. I understand the Catholic school thing, but in a non-religous school why shouldn't all holidays be celebrated and taught. Are we so closed minded that we don't want our children to experience traditions of other cultures. Traditions they might not experience otherwise. I am a German-Italian Catholic, I don't know much about Purim, Kwanza etc etc. Heck, I don't know much about some Catholic holidays because I am not a very religious person. I would love for my children to have the opportunity to learn about these things. I think when we have the opportunity to experience things that are different from what we are used to it makes us more understanding of the world, other cultures and peoples right to choose what they believe in. I think when we shut down things like Halloween in schools it is only teaching our children that if it isn't what you do you shouldn't accept it, be closed minded and get rid of anything you don't practice.
Lets teach our children that it is ok to be different. Not to judge people, but rather to take the time to understand why people do or believe what they do. Its ok if Susie dresses up as a cat on halloween, but johnny doesn't dress up at all. its ok if mary celebrates Christmas and bobby celebrates chanuka (sorry if I spelled this wrong) In other words its ok to be different. Let me teach you about my beliefs and you teach me about yours.
Wow that is so well said.

I don't have children yet...but I do hear about all the "PC" notions that are being done at schools through my friends who do have children. I am sick of all the "PC" b sh it that is taking place in the classrooms today.

But you can! And frankly, its not a religious school's job to teach your child about other religions. And in a country with a division of church and state, its not the public school's job to teach you about any religious holidays.
Growing up Jewish, I had a strong jewish education about my holidays. And growing up in America, you can't help but learn about Christian holidays.
My parents always encouraged me to meet people of different cultures and learn about their culture. I was an avid reader and would read about them. I learneda bout Diwali from my Hindu friend and about Islam in Hebrew school in a class about semetic cultures.
So while I agree with you, our children should learn about different cultures, a religious school is not the place for it.
As for public school, an education on all the different religions is OK, but it has to be inclusive- not just Judeo/Christian. But not every child should be expected to celebrate the holidays of other religions and cultures. But learning about them is fine.

I understand, but I disagree . I don't expect a catholic school to teach about Jewish holidays or vice versa and my original post said that, but I feel a public school IS the place to teach these things, as well as at home. Its a public school, its reflective of the world, a mixing pot, a place where all races, colors and religions are blended, a place where people of all religous and etnic backgrounds can share each others experiences and learn from one another. While reading is a great way to learn, I personally feel its better to learn by doing and experiencing and sharing. In public school Kids already learn about the history of Russia, China, Africa, Isreal and all the wars....why not their holidays and celebrations as well.
Public school is a multi-cultural school and I pay an obscene amount of taxes to send my children there and their education should be all inclusive.
But now what was this original post about....lol! I love a good debate, discussion, sorry if I rambled..

I see what you are saying, and you knwo what, I agree. Now that I think about it, I did learn about other religions in Global studies classes in school, but I wasn't forced to celebrate them.

No I don't thik Halloween is a requirement but it is a joy for kids. I donot believe that all should suffer because of a few. No one is forcing Halloween or any other holiday on anyone, but at the same time by taking it all away the few who don't wnat to celebrate are forcing everyone else to not have a halloween.
They are forcing ANYONE not to have a Halloween, the kids can still celebrate at home and go trick or treating with their PARENTS! Not doing something in school isn't going to ruin their lives!!
To the OP, I understand why you are frustrated bc they just took it away, but DS will have fun with you and DH going trick or treating
I agree.... I really don't see what the big deal is about dressing up at school. I don't think a kid is going to suffer, especially if they don't know anything else. Just do it when they come home.
