Anemia

When I had Lucas (C-Section) in the recovery room I lost a lot of blood. It wasn't enough to require a transfusion. My doc told me that on day 3 in the hospital my red blood count was increasing enough that I should go home and just take an iron suppliment for a week. It's been a week and I still feel cold even though it is 70 in my house right now. I am going to keep taking the iron pills but I was wondering if anyone else has been anemic and how long it will be till I feel warm again. It's really annoying!!

Re: Anemia

If you are taking the supplements and eating iron-rich food, I think you will probably start to feel better within another week or so.

Re: Anemia

Congrats on the baby!!

Sorry about the anemia.

It takes about a month for the blood to raise significantly, although you should start feeling better soon.

Did the doctors give you procrit to promote the red blood cells (to grow)? If not, that's an option. A tranfusion is severe and can be avoided at times.

My mom is severely anemic.

Believe it or not, in addition to the iron, she was told (by her oncologist) to:

-Drink a lot of water

-Drink grape juice (Welch's, make sure it's 100% juice)

-Eat liver (Chat Icon but any liver will help a LOT)

-Beets and carrots through a juicer, make a juice, drink this 3 times a day

ETA: Natural and raw veggies, none of the canned stuff

The last one is the most important. You'll instantly feel "warm" after about a day of doing that last one. No water or sugar, just natural goodness.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Re: Anemia

Yes, I was anemic coming out of the hospital 2 weeks ago.

My RBC was 8.3! I had to be transfused in the hospital with my own blood that a pre-donated.

I got home and saw my doc a week later. My counts went up significantly to 11.8! I'm still cold but in another week or so I should be better..normal for me is 12.5.

I was on a limited diet but I did take Flinstones chewables with iron. That seem to help.

It will take a few weeks, but if you can tolerate it eat foods high in iron like kale, liver, red meat, spinach..these will help tremendously.

Give your body time to heal. It had a major trauma. At least that's what the docs told me and they're right.

Oranges or orange juice should help too. Avoid sugary foods and go for the really healthy stuff. I found that I felt better if I avoided sugary drinks and snacks and ate more protein.

Re: Anemia

Thanks everyone. I called my doc and got the dosage I should be taking. Although I dont have my exact numbers I am going to try the whole high in iron foods along with my suppliment... although liver is out of the question, just the thought makes me gag.

And FYI, my mom was at a 5.4 which is "critical"...but her counts went up NATURALLY...there are many things that can be done to avoid a transfusion in today's world.

Re: Anemia

I was also very anemic after my last C.
I took iron pills for a while, a month or two? I was extremely exhausted, not cold.
they just checked my blood like a month ago and said all was fine.

Re: Anemia

If it is REALLY bad you can ask for a shot of Aranesp, that is what I get bi-weekly.

Sorry to keep posting on here, I hope you see it and it helps. I just wanted to add to what Deb said...that shot, or one of Procrit, will help.

My mom's count was 7.4 today...that's a BIG improvement in only a week.

Good luck and feel better! Chat Icon
