ANNOYED. Posting political campaign stuff in your school...?
Today was a FREE FOR ALL in my school - BY THE STAFF.
Obama fliers, posters, and other campaign materials for JUST Obama were placed all ofver the school by staff members.
In addition, several staff members wore Obama pins, shirts, etc.
I find this INCREDIBLY biased and incredibly unprofessional.
Granted I am not an Obama supporter, but regardless, I still think its SUCH a personal choice and SUCH and individual choice that we shouldn't be parading around one candidate. Our students are SO impressionable...and what does that say about us as a school to ONLY promote one person?!?!?!??!?!?
Sorry - its one thing for the Union to do it...but its ANOTHER for the WHOLE school to do it.
And for the record, I WOULD 10000000000000% feel the EXACT same way if it were all 100% about McCain. It's not right EITHER way.

I totally agree. I voted for Obama, but I still really felt uncomfortable talking to my kids about it today....deep down inside, I feel my place is to be neutral in regards to political opinions. They are so young and impressionable...(I teach 10 year olds.)

Same here. My kids kept asking me who I voted for and I told them that it was a private personal decision and I would not share with them.
I teach 6th grade....the emulate us in every way. I want them to be critical thinkers...not just regurgitate what I might tell them.
I remember how angry my parents would get when I told them that my teachers were telling me who they voted for/supported (back in middle/high school).

Well AFT (American Federation of Teachers) supports Obama/Biden, so its not really that surprising.

My principal wore her Obama button all last week and it didnt bother me.
I think anyone who wants to announce their support for a candidate should be allowed...thats why we have the 1st admendment.
As long as they werent doing anything as far as defacing McCain posters- being proud of your candidate is ok.

i agree that teachers should not discuss their political preferences with students. i think teachers are the ones who should educate kids so that they can make their own decisions. i guess every teacher is entitled to speak about it as they please - but to me it's like abusing your power.
outside of the classroom i think it is ok to discuss, so teacher's lounge is fair game - as annoying as it may be!

But only presenting one side? Is that ok?
I get that the UFT/AFT is in support of Obama. That's fine. Adults should most DEFINITELY discuss this amongst themselves in the teachers lounge, etc.
But I think that imposing a one-sided viewpoint on the children is a different story.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but this wouldn't bother me at all. Regardless of the fact that I'm an Obama supporter, I think it's important for kinds to see adults get EXCITED about an election. It's good for them to see that supporting someone who stands for something you believe in is reallyl important.
Yes, kids are impressionable--but I think that in this instance, if it's done correctly, it can actually make a POSITIVE impression on kids.
I also think in this particular instance that it makes for a great teachable moment to show kids that no matter who they are, what the color of their skin is, etc., they can achieve their dreams!

I don't mind it in faculty rooms but I don't think it belongs in the classroom.
