Another Cablevision Rant

I have been hearing about people getting letters about Cablevision switching to 100% digital so I called to find out what it was about. I was told that, in the near future EVERY TV will be required to have a digital box (an extra $10 per TV) to even be able to turn your TV on. No basic cable, nothing without it.

I told the rep when they do that is when I drop Cablevision and she said that's fine.

FIOS better hurry up and get to my area.

I thought they did this at the begining of the year. I remember constant Cablevision ad's which told eveyone the analog boxes won't work past a certain date.

you have a little extra time. Cable is giving the boxes free for a year or two. It is ridiculous though.

The switch in the Babylon area happened today. Without a box you just get a blue screen saying you need a box in order to view.

That was on a TV that is over 10 years old though - I have yet to check my QAM tuner - Acerone did you try yet?

I really don't get how people can be up in arms over this. CV is giving people up to three boxes FREE for a year! And it's very likely you will still get all your broadcast basics through QAM for free anyways. No box required.

I just checked my QAM on my slingplayer. They must have just cut my area over (plainview / old bethpage). I am now getting the stupid "cable box required" message.

I am getting broadcast basic QAM though on the following channels:

2.1
4.1
5.1 (LOL getting the CV vs. NEWSCORP message here so at least this works)
7.2
13.2

Can't get anything else yet. I might have to make some configuration changes. At least i'm getting these in HD though. Chat Icon

I made some changes... getting the following channels now through QAM. Free... no cable box required. And most of these in HD.

2.1
4.1
4.2
4.4
5.1
7.1
7.2
7.3
9.1
11.1
11.2
13.1
13.2
13.3

Why don't you understand the outrage that you now are going to be charged an additional $7 - $10 PER MONTH for EVERY TV you want to hook up to cable. That's a HUGE rate increase over your current service. The "free for a year" boxes is NOT a bonus - it's just putting off the expense and if you have more than 3 rooms with TV's you still have to pay and in a year, you'll have to pay. I also don't want to deal with a big box for my small kitchen TV. And QAM is only good if you want to watch the broadcast stations - I prefer Fox News Channel and Discovery. I get them now and soon I'll have to pay extra for them because you have to RENT a box to watch in any room other than the one we have that currently has the IO box. Why can't they offer a basic box for a one-time fee? I'm already paying for the IO service and one box. I don't need pay-per-views or enhanced TV Guide or the music stations in my kitchen, I just want the news and a few other stations. And by the way, FIOS may require boxes, but they have a small one that covers the basic need, and while it also has to be rented, it's less than half the price per month of the Cablevision box, so that's incentive to switch. It's kind of like telling you it's going to cost you $40 a month more, but now you have HBO and other movie channels, foreign language stations, etc. It's "better" but if you don't really want that and yet have to pay for it's a rate increase to watch the same stuff you get now.

I would understand the outrage if you were comparing apples to apples. But you aren't.

You are slamming one company for changing their policy which now basically MATCHES every one of their competitors on the market. The fact is Long Island cable subscribers have been SPOLIED for a long time for being able to watch basic cable without a cable box.

Why don't you ask anybody that lives in the five boroughs how long Time Warner has REQUIRED their subscribers to have cable boxes. Basically since their inception.

The fact remains, requiring cable boxes is nothing out of the ordinary in today's market. I said you can use QAM to get basics. But oh no, you want Fox News and are upset you have to pay for that now. So basically your attitude is you want to get something for nothing.

The box FIOS offers is really no different than the cable card that CV offers. So don't say CV doesn't offer a cheaper option because they do. And I would be willing to bet that down the road CV will come out with a similar box that FIOS has anyways.

And again... CV is still offering FREE QAM on their 2-13 stations. That's more than FIOS and Dish and Direct TV are offering.

Re: Another Cablevision Rant

my question is... why do we pay for tv at all?

i've wondered that for years

the whole point of TV programs is not to entertain us.. it's too attract viewers to a certain program/time slot and have advertisers pay mucho dinero in order to try to sell items we don't need to us.

in TV, the programming has no value..it's the commercials that are the most important

we are all paying for them to try to sell us stuff, no?

To answer your question:

Your paying for the convenience to use a company's (CV, Verizon, Satellite) private network to watch television in an area (like Long Island) that you would normally be out of range to get the free TV (over the air) that you speak of.

We have DirecTV, always have. We love it and have never had problems. That being said, my parents in MD, who have cable, Comcast, had to do the box switch a year or so ago, so I think Cablevision is just falling into what they have to do there.

Yep - we just got a cablecard from Cablevision. It is 2 dollars a month, which I think is the same if not a dollar cheaper than FIOS.

If we wanted the extra IO features, we could have gotten the tuning adapter for free, but we never use them and dont anticipate wanting it so we didnt get it.

Issue with this is you have to have a device that is cablecard ready. Chat Icon

I always had the boxes anyway - All the channels I was getting without the cable box were not great quality and I couldn't get all the same ones. I don't think it's that crazy. Don't you need a box to get the channels with FIOS and DISH as well?Chat Icon

I have been both a cable subscriber and a FIOS subscriber. I can tell you that the cable service can not even compare. They do not upgrade their equipment and can not keep up with present technology. Why should the charge more whe the phone and internet barely work. My tv rarely worked properly either.

I was paying 99 per month on cablevision triple play which incuding taxes comes to about 129 per month .

Now I have Fios for 69 ore month and with taxes paying $99 incuding all movie channels except HBO, and a multiroom dvr. I actually have reasonably quick internet service and my phone works!! Those are big pluses for me.

What did you expect the rep to say?

"okay, we wont switch to digital now?"

Yes, it's frustrating,,but there are other options out there. If you dont like the service or price of something, switch. No big deal.

No. Gov't digital conversion had to do with over the air signals.
