A Brentwood woman faces a DWI charge after she slammed into a police patrol car stopped on Hempstead Turnpike to assist a disabled motorist, police said Monday.

The force of the Friday night crash in East Meadow sent the police car into the disabled car, which then struck a tow truck, police said. The police car was totaled.

The officer's car, with its emergency lights on, was stopped in an eastbound lane at 11:05 p.m. Friday, in front of 2520 Hempstead Tpke., when the speeding 1997 Nissan Pathfinder hit it, police said.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was crossing between his car and the police car when the First Precinct officer at the scene noticed the Pathfinder "bearing down on them" so he "alerted [the driver] to rush to safety," a police news release said.

There were no injuries.

Police identified the driver of the Pathfinder as Lisa Mejia, 25, of 3 Lexington Ave., Brentwood. She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. Her arraignment information was not immediately available.

You know, this can't be a coincidence, so many of them in a short period of time. It makes me wonder if the spotlight is on it right now, but it's been happening for much longer than we realize.
