I know the main post office in NYC on 34th street does the letters to santa. In years past i've gone there and picked out a letter or two from children. I believe they were sorted by borough.
maybe ask your post office if they do this as well.

We always do 2 kids from the NY Cares Winter Wishes program.
Which reminds me to go and check if they are having registration yet.
I wanted to add that this is the time of year that many of the soldiers at Any Soldier request christmas decorations for their office and barracks and holiday cards to send home. We try to fulfill a few of those as well.

Our school psychologist provides us teachers with families in our own building who need some kindness and generosity.
You could try calling your school district for that information ( psychologist/counseling services) In my district we use a company called Occupations inc.

I've done NYCares the past 3 years.. you get letters to Santa from children that you fulfill.. it's called Winter Wishes...
Here is the link, but registration hasn't started yet.. end of October I guess.
We usually ask for 2 children- and mostly get young boys from Harlem or the Bronx... we've yet to get a girl.
winter wishes
edited to add.. at our local parish- St. Martin of Tours in Amityville, they do a wishing tree the beginning of Advent that kids and Sr. Citizens post what they want for Christmas and you return them to the outreach office.
We usually do 1 child, and 1 sr. citizen.
We also participate in Operation Christmas Child- another faith based program that distributes shoe box gifts to children throughout the world. These are rather inexpensive to make $10-12/box
