Another Fridge question

We are redoing our kitchen in our new condo. It is a narrow galley kitchen. Originally we were thinking of a fridge with french doors on top, freezer on bottom, but I was just thinking that with a narrow kitchen maybe it would be better to get a side by side. I never liked the idea of a side by side because I didn't think the fridge side would be wide enough. Thoughts?

Re: Another Fridge question

We have a galley kitchen and we have a side by side fridge. I think it's a lot better.

We don't have a galley kitchen, but the area where our fridge is is narrow. We got the french door/bottom freezer one--it works great in that space.

I like the way side by side seem to keep frozen foods more organized. JMO.

I don't have a gallery kitchen but I am having this debate right now as I am redoing my kitchen as well.

I love the look of french door fridges by far and since I am redoing - I want the best look...but the counter depth models are smaller (cu ft) than the side by sides. Also most don't have ice on the door and DH really wants that.

Most freezer bottoms (counter depth) are only around 20 cu feet. My current fridge is 25 cu and jam packed as it is. I don't think I could go backward. I am now looking into 2 side by side models that are around 24.5 cu feet.

Not sure if counter depth is important to you or not....but the way my kitchen is going to be set up - if I don't do counter depth - I would have to move everything up the be even wit the fridge or else it will look dumb - making kichen space smaller and even shorten up my island to have enough walk thru space.

Re: Another Fridge question

We have a side by side, granted we don't have a small kitchen. It was there when we moved into the house and I really don't like it. I find that there is not enough room in the freezer because it's so narrow. We ended up buying a chest freezer which we keep in the laundry room in the basement as we like to bulk shop for our meat and stuff.

However, I would say that a side by side in a galley kitchen that may not have alot of space is probably a good option.

I have a large galley style kitchen.

While I like the look of the French doors none of them offered me as much freezer space. I like to buy in bulk and do a lot of cooking so that was a priority.

One downside for me with side by side is b eing able to fit large platters/cakes when entertaining. IL's live a couple of miles away so we kept our large deli platters in their Sub-zero for our housewarming.

I would go for the side by side style.
My ILs just redid their kitchen and got the kind w/ the freezer on the bottom and MIL is always complaining theres not enough room in the freezer or the fridge! So she ends up putting all the bigger items in the basement fridge.

Re: Another Fridge question

I just purchased a bottom-freezer fridge but there is only 1 door to the fridge on top. The french doors would not have worked in my kitchen becasue I have a built in pantry on one side that the door would smack into constantly. I love it and the 1 door on top for the fridge doesn't bother me. the bottom freezer is great! So much better than my old side by side. I couldn't fit a turkey in my old freezer!

Re: Another Fridge question

I personally don't care for side/side fridges, the freezer is so tiny.
