Another question about the hsg...anyone?

I am DEATHLY afraid of having the hsg test done. I have ZERO tolerance for pain and just being in any medical offices or hospitals scares the hell out of me. I was wondering if I were to ask my gyno for a stronger prescription than a regular advil or motrin for before and after, if she would do this for me. I cant even see myself being able to lay still long enough to even have the test done in the first place. If I explain this to her..do you think she would be open to giving me something stronger? Has anyone ever done this? Should I even bother asking??

On a side note..I know many of you have already had this test done and I commend you for your courage. I am in no way trying to make my hsg test more important or more serious than yours at all...I just think knowing myself, I should at least ask and see what she can do for me.

I saw that you should ask...worse your dr. can say is no and then you are no worse off than you are now.

I would ask my dr. for something stronger. It was very uncomfortable for me and I was wishing I took a vicodin before hand.

Noreen I haven't had the HSG done, but I say ASK for something stronger for the pain .. it definitely CANNOT and does not hurt to ask!!

YOu should absolutely ask for something. I never thought I could even take a motrin. The anxiety makes is so much worse, so I say you should take some motrin on your own and ask her for something for the anxiety to help you get through it like Xanax or Ativan. They are both really safe quick acting sedative drugs that wont make you fall asleep but you will be calm. The test is really quick, I can say that, hope this helps.

Just wanted to wish you good luck - I'm having my done Tuesday so I can post after and let you know my experience if you'd like.



My dr. put me on antibiotics before the HSG - just wondering if anyone else was put on them too?

I was pretty nervous about my HSG. You definitely need to be on antibiotics. It can cause infection and you don't want that.

I was instructed by my RE to take 2 advil two hours before the test, and then 2 advil one hour before. I took 3 advil both times. You can take a more powerful painkiller, it won't interfere with the test. The wait for the test was horrible and the wait for my results were worse. However, the test itself was literally 5-10 min. I have to say, I was fortunate and maybe well drugged,....because I only felt AF type pain...for about 3 minutes. Like pressure.....

I hated that I couldn't see the monitor and my doctor, who did it didn't let me know how things looked. He was a man of few words. I had to go to a radiology place in lake success. Thank goodness the technician was sweet.

Ask for it, and if s/he doesn't give it to you, take more than the recommended dosage of a regular pill (which is all prescription strength is anyway.) i took prescription strength motrin an hour before. If you take three motrin, it's the same thing. I felt more pain and cramping the next day then I did during the actual procedure! GL! You'll do fine.
