Another Reason To Not Leave Your Kids Alone On Vacation
I remember someone posting how they leave their kids alone in the hotel room on vacation while they are just a few hundred feet away. Another reminder as to why this just isn't a good idea.
I really hope they find this little girl

I saw the people magazine cover with her on it and cannot imagine the devastation.
But I do NOT understand how you leave your sleeping children in a hotel room while you eat dinner and check on them every 30 minutes.
WHAT were they thinking?

I cried when I saw this story...But come on- WHY would you leave a child alone for even a minute!!?? What if there was a fire?? What if the child choked?? Or wandered off or was taken-as in this case..
Maybe in other countries, parents ar more laid back. But that situation was ridiculous!!!! It makes me angry..

I agree. Apparently they could see the front door from the restaurant, but unfortunately that wasn't enough.
I really hope the poster that said she leaves them alone and had no qualms about it reads this thread. I don't recall the username..but that's why I posted this, so she would think twice.

I don't believe that anyone said that they ever would do that.
Racheee did a post about this story in the early days. Maybe you're confusing the two?

Yeah, someone did. I questioned it..she stated it was fine, etc. I'll have to look for the post. I can't even remember what the topic was to be honest.

Re: Another Reason To Not Leave Your Kids Alone On Vacation
I think I may have found what you were talking about...
"here is the place that my sister and BIL stayed with my niece. Its a very nice place, not too old but the best part is being right on the beach and if you get one of the rooms on the "deck", you can leave your child in the room and sit right outside and relax."
I don't think they meant that they were leaving the kid alone and going off. I think she just meant that you can sit outside on the deck at night while the kids are sleeping.

Nope, it was this:
"We try to get a suite, so one or both of the DC can be in a different room than us. We also bring a monitor so we can leave the room. Our monitor has an "out of range" alarm, so if we go too far, it lets us know. If you are able to get to the lobby and still be in range, that would be ideal. Sometimes, the elevator area has some seats you could hang out in"

Nope, sorry I would not leave my children alone in the room. I'd spring for a suite or a room with a patio and hang out there.
ETA: I do hope they find that little girl safe and sound.

Re: Another Reason To Not Leave Your Kids Alone On Vacation
I'm sorry this happened but what where those parents thinking! Please the other day I had DS in the stroller in my mom's backyard (she lives next door) ready to take DS to the park. I had to go in my mom's house for something and told my mom to watch DS. Then I see her coming in the house! I was like "what are you doing". She was acting like I was being overprotective. I flipped out. I don't want him alone ever!

I read it as the elevator lobby, not the downstairs hotel lobby. Maybe I misunderstood?

Re: Another Reason To Not Leave Your Kids Alone On Vacation
This is NOT something that I would do, however, I do think its a big cultural difference between the US and Europe, people here still leave their babies outside of shops (although I rarely see it these days) A very good friend of mine has left her children in a hotel room and gone down to the lobby for dinner, the hotel offered a baby listening service. Also, they were staying at a very expensive, very posh resort, they had no idea that Portugal had such a big paedophilic ring.
I am not defending them, I think its 200% wrong to leave your kids alone in a hotel room! But there are some cultural differences at work here..
Did you see her eyes? Very interesting!

Re: Another Reason To Not Leave Your Kids Alone On Vacation
I have to say when we were on vacation in Florida, we met another couple from England who said they routinely leave their 1 year old daughter in the hotel room while they go to dinner on the other side of the resort. They seemed to think we were crazy for not doing the same. I think the mentality in other countries might be very different from here, as I could never even consider this an option.

Re: Another Reason To Not Leave Your Kids Alone On Vacation
My BIL from Scotland said this happens all the time where he is from.
And we had a big argument that nothing is wrong with what they did. He said every 20 mins they would come by to check on them and it was equivalent to being across the street for dinner.

<shrug> what's the difference? Alone in a hotel room is alone in a hotel room.
