Another SLR camera question, sorry to be a pain
I had a lot of trouble talking DH into the camera but I know that if I get an SLR I will not be able to buy the extra lens now. So my question is will it still be worth it to have the camera without the lens. Will the picture it takes with the included lens be that much better than my regular digital camera b/c it could be a long while before I can convince him to buy the lens.
ETA: what lens is it that I need to add to the camera? I'll at least check and see how much it's going to cost. A couple of them say they come with 18-55mm optical zoom so would that be what I would've needed but already included? sounds like it.

for the Nikon D40 SLR it is only sold with the lens. It comes with this lens: Nikon 18-55mm II . It was $599 at Ritz Camera and they have specials all the time. I liked this because it was the smallest SLR available (and cheapest) THey have free shipping and no tax.
When I purchased it a few months ago it came with a $50 off your next purchase and a free tiny photo printer.
The lense that it comes with is great and for my birthday/Mother's Day/anniversary present I got a top rated lense that is more than the camera. I never have to buy another lens again!
This site is great about telling you about the options you have for the camera. It also reviews other SLR's. It has a user friendly guide that you can understand and explains the settings.

It will definitely improve the photos with the included lens.
More importantly there will be no delay when you take the picture - which I find is key when you're taking photos of kids that move.

I have a Canon and never use the lens that came with it. Yes, you'll get better pictures than you would with a point and shoot, but IMO the lens stinks. Sorry, but once you compare to the pics you get with a decent lens, there is no comparison. I don't know about the Nikon, but I know you can buy a Canon without the lens (cheaper) and then you can buy a good lens. I have several lenses, but there are 2 that I mainly use.
For portraits: 50mm f/1.8 lens This lens is AMAZING and cheap too. You'll get great background blur and super sharp pics. I also love it because the lens is very small so it makes the camera more portable. It is a fixed focal length so you can't zoom in you have to "foot zoom" or move closer/further from the subject.
For everyday pics I use a 17-40mm f/4 zoom lens. Great pics!
