This sounds like it makes sense, but I heard from a supposedly good source (someone who works for the company) that they are planning on making a movie and that Tony did NOT die. The writer was just trying to show that life goes on, and that Tony will always live in fear of his impending death, but you can't stop living or "believing"

My DH had a similar take BUT the viewer was whacked not Tony. Everything went dark when we were at the height of the scene then boom, we are dead. It was to show us how fast one can get whacked and how it is at the moment you least expected it. It was a metaphor into what Bobby and Tony talked about when they talked about death.
after rewatching and reading on the internet, I am leaning towards this explanation... We as the viewer died... sure we wanted an ending, but such is life and death...Unfortunately we don't get to pick when it all ends for us. Also rewatching the scene last night I had to laugh as it was not suspensful whatsoever when I knew that nothing was going to actually happen.

It's hard for me to believe that David Chase being so lauded for his creativity, etc. would end this series with a scene straight from The Godfather.
