Zika ... does everyone really have to be concerned about this.

I know its a threat to pregnant people but if you are not pregnant do you have to worry about it?

I looked it up and it doesn't seem to be really a big deal if you do get it and you might not even know you have it (besides pregnant people)

am I misinformed should I be worried about this?

I was thinking the same thing! I only knew it was a concern for pregnant women?!? Also this is not news, the mosquito that carries zika has been in all those areas for a long time.

Re: another spinoff ;) ... Zika ...

I read that men have to be more concerned than women, actually. As long as a woman isn't pregnant, or gets pregnant within a few months of getting infected, she will be fine. Men, however, can apparently keep the virus for a much longer time, and can transmit it sexually, potentially infecting a fetus and causing birth defects.

http://www.everydayhealth.com/news/10-essential-facts-about-zika-virus/

For most people, the Zika virus causes only a brief, mild flu-like illness. But new research points to a possible connection to higher rates of Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults, a condition in which the immune system attacks nerves following an infection, causing muscle weakness and paralysis. In pregnant women, the virus can cause birth defects, including microcephaly — an abnormally small head and brain size.

I'm not concerned at all. I just don't worry about things. If things are going to happen to me so be it at least I can say I enjoyed my life!

Re: another spinoff ;) ... Zika ...

DH and I are thinking of a vacation in Aruba. So I looked up Zika there. Form what I read, the biggest threat to everyday people is bringing it here for transmission country wide

Even though I'm Not pregnant and won't be, if I get bit and get Zika and don't show any symptoms - I can still transmit it locally. I also read if I get bit by a mosquito here with the zika virus in me, that mosquito can bite someone right after me and transmit it to them and so on.

That scares me. Again, not for me personally. But I'd hate to think that my virus (that I didn't know I had) can potentially harm someone I'm out at a backyard party with bc a mosquito decided to have a buffet on us.

I don't know how true it is - but I read this on a Zika cdc website.

My Dr said they don't know how it affects children and better to be safe and use bug spray since their brains are still developing.

I am not concerned- I have no plans to become pregnant- Dd's pediatrician said they are advising that parents use advanced precautions-bug spray containing 10% or more DEET. He advised we spray dd clothes with the bug spray and allow it to dry before going out--we spent a week in the Dominican Republic and only I got bit once in my friend's apartment in the middle of the capital the only time I forgot to put bug spray on myself.
Zika has been around for over sixty years and travelers with confirmed cases are living in NY. I feel the best you can do is keep living your life and take precautions.

thanks I am not concerned about it. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't being to laxed about it. mosquitos love me and I get bit all the time. maybe this year I will make sure just to put bug spray on every time I go out after 5:00pm

I will also be more vigilant on putting it on my kids this year.
