another vaccination question from a soon to be mom
I just finished watching oprah and thought I would come over here to parenting to see if anyone may be able to help with some questions. While I understand there is not necessarily a "proven" correlation between vaccinations and autism, for me personally, I feel like if there is something I can remotely do to even by chance reduce the possibility of having my son have autism, I should do it. That being said, I don't understand what delaying the shots does and if you do delay, how do you set up a schedule? I am expecting a boy early this winter and understand it is more prevalent in boys so definitely am thikning this is something I need to be very informed about. I will say I do not feel I will just vaccinate as per what they tell the masses but am wondering for those that have split the shots, why does that make the difference and how did you determine a "good" schedule. Also, have any of you found doctors open to this belief or is it always going to be a struggle.

splitting up the shots helps you see any reactions your child may be getting... Sort of like waiting a few days when introducing new foods to a child to check for reactions...
Vaccinations do NOT cause autism.

See, I am more concerned about my DD getting one of those diseases than autism. I am sorry but I think there is a genetic predisposition or something else that is involved, not just a vaccination...

I am the same way about DS.
And these diseases aren't around for a reason, but they do still exist and they can come back.

Re: another vaccination question from a soon to be mom
I did not allow DS to get the hep. shot at the hospital. I did not think it was necessary for a 1 day old to be vaccinated for hepatitis. My ped. agreed. He gave DS his first shot at 2 months. I allow 1 shot a month to monitor any reactions. I told the ped. that I will be ok with doing 2 shots in the future if it is the 2nd and 3rd dose of shots that have already been given to DS with no reactions. I will NOT give the rotavirus shot (my ped. does not give it or suggest it due to the health risks). I will also NOT be giving DS the flu shot and probably not the chicken pox shot until he goes to school and it is necessary. My situation is also different than some as DS is not in daycare and will not be attending so he doesnt have as great of a need for vaccinations as other children.

Liza, I understand that you work in this field and I appreciate all of your posts on the info that is out there. However, how can you be 100% sure of this? There is still a lot of research being done on what does or does not cause autism.

I agree with lipglossjunky. There are thousands of document cases of children who never had a vaccine, who still have autism. Parents of children with autism often mention that in hindsight, there were signs well before vaccinations. Thermerisol has been decreased drastically over the years, yet # of diagnoses has increased. There is nothing other than gut feelings and anecdotal "evidence" of a link between autism and vaccines.
I'm siding with the overwhelming science backing up the lack of a link between autism and vaccines. The diseases that the vaccines prevent can kill. I can't take that risk with my DC.

Re: another vaccination question from a soon to be mom
thanks everyone for your responses. I guess my next question then is Im not opposed to the vaccinations but is there a detriment to postponong or splitting up? If not , does it really matter to peds? I guess Im not understading if you choose not to vaccinate at all I can certainly understand why docs and others may take issue with that, since diseases can kill but to split upp and delay the vaccines, how does that hurt?

Good research has been done looking for the link - especially with the recent law suits against the drug companies. The law suits were dropped due to overwhelming lack of evdience....
but back to the OP - there really should not be any problem breaking up any vaccines. Talk to your pediatrician - they should supprt your decision to break up any shots - even the 2 mt, 4 mt, 6 mt... I now I was given the option to do so, but I decided against it because it would mean having to take more trips to the dr, and giving him shots more often, which was upsetting to him....
The MMR I will probably split up because I had a bad reaction to it when I was little, and wouldnt want Cailen to go thru that....
