any advice on going back to school?
well the last time I was in school was in 2003, i was studying media studies but towards the end of the semester, I flunked so my gpa went below 2.0. I want to go back to school but I want to get my b.a in Fashion Merchandising.
basically, is there anyway that I could go, start at F.I.T with the credits I had at hunter but without having my gpa considered or without having to go back to hunter to raise it?
TIA

You have to find out if they could transfer over. Best thing to do is call and find out. If you failed they definitely can't.

Re: any advice on going back to school?
The problem is 1- getting into FIT 2-the credits that will be accepted
FIT probably will not admit you into a program with a GPA below a 2.5, so to raise that you could go back to Hunter, a community college, or apply as a non-matriculated student (not enrolled in a program) at FIT. Non-matriculated students do not receive aid.
Most SUNYs and CUNYs will only accept credits with a grade of C or higher, and some will only take from that the credits that will apply to your program. So the FIT degree could take you 100+ credits, even if you have 60 already. Set up an appointment at FIT to discuss your options, but you probably won't be able to enter into their fashion program directly.
They won't admit you without looking and taking into consideration Hunter.
Good luck!

Re: any advice on going back to school?
Pretty much any GPA below a 2.0 is considered not in good academic standing and pretty much transferrable. FIT's fashion merc program has also gotten more difficult to get into than it used to be. How many total Hunter credits do you have? Definitely talk to FIT, but if you have total less than 64 credits - your best bet is probably to do a semester or two at community college - which will bring up your GPA and save you a lot of money and then look to apply to FIT as a transfer.

Re: any advice on going back to school?
Most likely, they will consider your GPA and the coursework you took while at Hunter. I would recommend talking to someone at FIT about what their pre-requisites and admission requirements are for transfer students.
I am willing to bet you'll probably have to go to a community college or back to Hunter to pull up your GPA. I bet you can do it though! Just make sure you get solid info before signing up for classes, so you don't waste your time on courses you don't need.
After reading Beth's post - check with FIT about the grades too - I transferred into a competitve school taht only accepted Bs for transfer credit.

Michal, I have like around 70.
thanks everyone.
I will make an appointment to speak to a counselor.
Here's what it says on their site:
The Admissions Committee looks at your overall academic performance - as well as individual grades and the kinds of courses taken - to choose applicants with the greatest potential to succeed at FIT. Although each major receives a different number of applications for a limited number of places, we generally consider applicants with a grade point average in the range of a B or better.
So that's about a 3.0--you might want to see where you want to go to raise it--if not Hunter, a local community college.

how long were you in school to begin with?
if not long....why not just apply with no credits? As a blank slate?

Re: any advice on going back to school?
My sis is a junior at FIT. She just transferred there this semester. She was also scared of not getting in because she graduated with an Associates with a 2.6GPA. The counselor told her that if she didn't get it, to take FIT classes unmatriculated. THen if you do really good in those classes, basically all A's, you have a very good chance of getting in the follwing school year.
Good luck with everything!!!!

Re: any advice on going back to school?
Tania - although they are more expensive than FIT - LIM and Parsons also have fashion merc programs - you should look into their transfer policies as well and see what your best option is.

That's illegal, and since the CUNYs all share info. they would file a law suit.

Exactly - if she already went to Hunter - FIT is going to know that in a second.

The only problem with nonmatriculated students is that financial aid won't cover any of that, if that's an issue. Many students don't realize that until after they register.

OK, that's better! Sometimes when you've already attended a school they don't make you reapply--you rematriculate, and sometimes the standards aren't as strict for coming back. Definitely let them know you were there, and the circumstances of the low GPA (if it's an isolated semester or two, better than a trend for years).

And I can say from experience that the classes I take now I am so much more serious about because I am older and know what I want to do...Returning students are often the most successful!
