Any college admissions counselors out there?

I am thinking of applying for a few jobs as admissions counselors and was wondering how you like it and what you do on a day to day basis?

Most of the people we hire straight from college have experience working in Admissions as an undergrad. or were a tour guide as an undergrad. Even our entry-level jobs ask for 3-5 years experience, but they will count undergrad. work for entry-level. Everyone we have hired lately hold master's degrees, but I think that is partly that many of the people with master's in counseling wind up not being able to find placements, so most of our newest counselors have that degree.

I would love this as a job as well. I interviewed a long time ago at a college however, it was more like an "Open House".
Out of about 25 of us I think they selected two people.

That sounds really odd. I work at a public university and they always post jobs as they come along, but we usually get over 100 applicants for each job. I've been on a few hiring committees lately, and we put resumes into piles--no experience in higher ed., some experience, a lot of experience...First round we interview 6 people by a committee (usually 6 people on a committee), second round bring back 3.

Re: Any college admissions counselors out there?

I did a lot of work in college access in HS, so maybe that would count as experience.

I can't tear myself away form academia, it seems.

Re: Any college admissions counselors out there?

One thing I will add--there is a lot of turnover at the lower level positions, because it usually involves a lot of travel and driving to all different high schools. People I know doing out of state travel and international recruiting are trying to get out of admissions to be at home more with their spouses or family. I've been in my job long enough so that I don't have to travel as much (I've also changed job responsibilities from when I started), but when I started it was days or weeks at a time. It's usually a young, fun atmosphere though, and for the most part working with the students is nice.

i worked at an ivy, and now at a state, and the worse the college is, the more pressure there is to bring in the numbers. the better the school the less you have to worry about making target. maybe about how good the applicants are, but many schools worry about making the numbers they need to keep them afloat.
