Any East End/ Suffolk Ladies Drive to Queens??
Hi, DH and I are looking at the Smithtown/ St. James area but both work in Queens.....any of you experience the morning drive??
How long is it on a regular morning and back home?
How long if it snows??
TIA

Re: Any East End/ Suffolk Ladies Drive to Queens??
I live in Kings Park - just ever so slightly west of Smithtown. My DH works in Queens so Smithtown was as far east as we could look.
St. James is great but for him it would take an extra 15 minutes just to get to a major highway as compared to Kings Park/some areas of Smithtown.
On average it takes him about an hour to get to work - but LI traffic is unpredictable, so some days it can be much more. He also sets up his appointments with clients to be along his way into the office, so that he rarely drives straight from home to Queens. If he HAS TO be there by a certain time, he allows himself 1.5-2 hours, but generally speaking closer to an hour or hour and 15 minutes.

DH goes from Setauket to Bayside - but he is a teacher and drives w/no traffic - and he drives like a lunatic and it takes him 45-an hour.
You really do get used to it. We loved the area and were willing to commute for it.
the only time it sucked was when gas was over $4 a gallon

Re: Any East End/ Suffolk Ladies Drive to Queens??
when I taught in Bayside and lived in Huntington, I had to leave by 6:30 for it to take 45 minutes. later than that would push it easily to an hour.
the commute home wasn't as bad, since I left before 4. but it gets really bad on the Jewish Holidays (to get home before sundown), Thanksgiving Wednesday and Fridays after Memorial Day.

We're not the East End, but we live in the Greenlawn/E. Northport area and DH works in Richmond Hill. He takes the train to Jamaica (it's express from Huntington - no stops!) and then the J train to his school. his total commute is about 45- 1 hour.

Re: Any East End/ Suffolk Ladies Drive to Queens??
I live in Nesconset and drive to Bayside every day. I can get to work in 40-45 minutes, but I leave very early (5:50) and I leave work early too (2:15 and I'm home by 3.) If you leave any time after 6:15, a lot more cars are on the road and it adds to your time. Snow can add ALOT of time to your commute-it once took me 3 hours to get to work, but that was a huge storm and city schools never close (I'm a teacher.) ! St. James is kind of far from the highways, that's something to think about when you look.

Re: Any East End/ Suffolk Ladies Drive to Queens??
i live in Yaphank and drive to hempstead....i know its not the advice you wanted but i drive at off times so the commute is not that bad but when i changed hours and left a few times in rush hour it was awful.....so depending on your work times really think about how much time you will be in the car each day some days i reallyi hate my commute but right now the job is worth the money

I drive from Islandia to New Hyde Park... mornings aren't usually that bad... usually 45 mins to 1 hour. Going home is another story... if I get on the road anywhere between 4-6, it takes over an hour to get home. So, most days I go to the gym right by work to kill some time before driving home. It helps a LOT to wait until 6:30-7 to hit the road. HTH!

Re: Any East End/ Suffolk Ladies Drive to Queens??
Basically I MUST be at work before 8:10...but usually get there at 7:00
I get out some days at 2:30 and others at 3:30
It's strange to me bc I live 15 mins from my job if I were to drive there at like midnight, but my commute takes me 40 minutes daily..I wouldn't mind an 1.5 drive...I teach so at least I'd have my summers to not commute and vacations too lol
