Please tell me about East Meadow
I am looking in to buying a house in East Meadow, but I don't know too much about it. What are the demographics like? I would DD to go to a school with a diverse population, but also with a large Jewish community. Does East Meadow have this? Are the schools big? Does it have a "town"? Are there any areas in East Meadow that are "not as good as others"?
TIA

LOVE east meadow! i wish DH would have considered buying a house here. it's so central to everything in Nassau County!
it's very, very diverse, which is great. just stay away from the area near the high school, unless you also want to live near a jail
the largest Jewish community is, like the PP said, near the Barnum Woods area, which is south of Hempstead Tpke right off of Merrick Ave (Barnum Woods is an elementary school).
there are five elementary schools, one middle school (Woodland, right off of East Meadow Ave) and one high school. although W.T. Clarke HS is in Westbury, it's considered part of the East Meadow school district (actually Clarke is a middle school too).
the closest thing to a town would be East Meadow Avenue between Prospect Avenue and Front Street. it's kind of like the town's main street.
because East Meadow is so big i would drive around and see which areas you like best. as far as i know the "worst" area is the one north of Hempstead Tpke by the hospital, just west of Walmart, but i am not 100% sure of this (feel free to correct me if you live in that area ).

DH and I bought a hose here in Oct 07. EM has a good-size Jewish population, but it's got a nice mix of all people. Barnum Woods has the largest % of Jews, but it's not the only place we live, lol. Barnum Woods generally has the highest taxes. Our house is in the "Parkway" section, and we're one of several Jewish families.
EM technically has two high schools, with corresponding middle and elementary schools. The HS are about 1200 students per building. As an educator, I feel that that's a great size. Big enough so that there are lots of options for courses and programs, but not so big that a kid could get lost. The school district as a whole is consistently rated well.
There's no real "man street" or "village" to East Meadow. The closest thing we have to that would be the area around the pool. But there's tons of shopping, restaurants, etc.
I don't think that areas are significantly better than others. You hear people talk about Barnum Woods like it's drastically different, but in reality, the entire town is pretty and friendly and well-maintained.
Feel free to FM if you've got any questions - two houses on my block are for sale, and I would love some more nice neighbors!

Re: Please tell me about East Meadow
I have lived in East Meadow my whole life. I have always been happy here. Our kids went to Barnum Woods, and there is a large Jewish population, although we are not Jewish. I felt the schools were very good. All of my kids did well, and all went on to receive college scholarships. Good luck! I know there are many nice homes for sale in East Meadow, and it is a great place to live and raise a family.

Re: Please tell me about East Meadow
we just moved there about 6 months ago and love it so far. We are by Eisenhower Park which is a great perk for us. I love the access it gives us to the stores, restaurants and highways. Our block is quiet and well maintained but not so well manicured that you feel you have to keep up with the Jones'. We are not Jewish either but there is a fair mix in our neighborhood. We are looking forward to starting a family here!

I would have to disagree. My parents live in that area. It's called Clearmeadow. Part of it is capes and then further in the neighborhood are splits. I grew up there and so wish we could afford that area when we were looking for a house. It's very quiet, good neighbors and everyone maintains their property very well. We live on the opposite side of the Tpke behind the Empress Diner.
You have to drive around the neighborhoods and see what areas you like. As small as I sometimes feel EM is, it is actually pretty big and I'm not including the Park. The one thing we love about EM is how diverse it is and how close it is to everything.

Re: Please tell me about East Meadow
Oh just thought about this...
when we were looking at homes in EM, there was a section of homes off Newbridge about 1 mile south of Hempstead Tpke where the houses were smaller and had no basements. (Im trying to remember some of the street names, but I am drawing a complete blank)
According to our REA, she said the builder built all the homes in that area without basements and the layout is kinda weird. The bedrooms are ridiculously small and they were all ranches. Some of the neighbors in those areas built up the houses and they are gorgeous, but the ones in our price range were still the original homes. I would stay away from that area unless you are looking for something small.

Re: Please tell me about East Meadow
I just bought a split in Clearmeadow and I had stayed away from that area b/c I THOUGHT it was a bad area b/c it's near the hospital and jail... We stalked that area for 2 weeks all times of and night and we were really impressed.
We just closed on Wednesday and our neighbors have already waved, stopped by to say hi and are very friendly.

How is this relavant to the OP's questions?

She wanted to know areas where to stay away from so that was my observation from when I was looking at homes in EM...
ETA considering she has a child, just thought a smaller house wasnt something she was looking for anyway...

DH and I grew up in East Meadow and bought a house here. It's a great area...close to a lot of things. I wouldn't say there are any areas to stay away from.

I think that people are under that assumption of the Clearmeadow neighborhood and that is so not the case.
You might see my parents walking their shi tzus around the neighborhood, if you haven't already.

i agree. theres no "bad" section of EM and theres certainly nothing wrong with Clearmeadow. the area behind walmart and stop and shop is very nice with splits, ranches, and capes. i dont consider it near the jail at all and to have the hospital a few blocks away i consider a plus in case of emergencies. on top of that, the elementary school has the smallest student to teacher ratio of any of the other elem schools which i consider a plus as well.
