Any experiences with bamboo flooring?
Since I have always been a fan of hardwood floors in certain rooms every house we have looked at has a carpet laid over a base floor (not wood) and not stretched/stapled in. SO I was thinking of doing hardwood but Bamboo flooring but wanted to see if people have done that yet? My parents got pre-finished hardwood floors and they are nice but a bit more then Bamboo and Bamboo is said to be slightly more durable then certain hardwood floors.
Opinions please (we are pricing out things that might need to be done before moving in so we know what to have on hand cash wise)

Re: Any experiences with bamboo flooring?
I LOVE my bamboo flooring! We have the natural color version. It looks great in my office. According to many different charts I've seen (from various independent testers), bamboo is harder than almost any wood. My contractor kept commenting about how strong it is.
We like bamboo so much, we're planning on getting the stranded version for our dining room, and possibly kitchen too next year. As strong as regular bamboo is, the stranded version is even stronger. http://www.teragren.com/products_flooring_synergy.html
We used TeraGren because it sustainably harvests their bamboo (they don't clear-cut rainforests to plant their cash crop), there's no poisonous chemicals in their glues, and they have some of the toughest bamboo out there.

We have it throughout the house and like it. We have the "natural" color and I really don't like light wood floors -- but I think they can be stained darker if that's your preference.
(Be careful though: some darker bamboo flooring can be up to 20% less durable than the natural color -- apparently it all depends on how the darker color is achieved.)

I also would like to go with a dark color and I see Teragren has a nice looking one.

The color is achieved by "cooking" the bamboo. There's no stain involved. The baking process is what makes it less strong. However, the strand version, since it's made differently, is much stronger than uncarmelized bamboo.

Re: Any experiences with bamboo flooring?
Thank you so much for all the info. That is why I was so torn because I might want coffee bean (think that is the color) or a darker reddish color depending on the house (we are in limbo which house yet we might buy)
