Any "first sippy cup" recommendations?
DS isn't 6 months yet, but I read we can start giving him a sippy cup to hold and maybe start trying to use.
a) is this true?
b) do you recommend one? We've tried generic ones and he can't get anything out of it. Any recommendations on what he can use at his young age to start with?

Tommie tipee makes one for 4m+, it's supposed to be easier to drink from. I haven't used it yet. I got it at target.

You can squeeze the water up a bit so he starts sucking and getting the hang of it. When ds was that age i would give it to him in his high chair after i fed him and let him try it out for a few minutes while i cleaned up.
Straw cups are better for their oral muscular development according to a speech therapist I know. Plus, since he knows how to drink out of the straw I never have to worry about making sure I have a cup with me because you can get a straw pretty kch anywhere!!

have to agree. the little gripper is great. it was def. easy for my DD to use, she's 16 months old tom. and still loves it!

DD loves this one and is able to drink from it on her own at 7 months. She picked it up very quickly with this cup.
I also have the Tommee Tippee spout ones and don't like them as much as the Playtex straw one. And like a PP said, you'll never have to worry about having a cup because you can get a straw almost anywhere you go.

I'll be honest, there are bad reviews, but when reading the reviews remember a few things....
Yes, the straw for the cup is short, but this is a training cup, therefore you will probably only be putting water in it. So whatever waste there is, IMO is no big deal. And if really bothers you, you can buy replacement straws that are longer.
Yes, when shaken and tipped, the cup does drip (leak). There is no valve in the straw. It is a training cup, if there was a valve, the liquid wouldn't flow up easily when squeezed. Again though, you're probably only going to be putting water in it, and it only drips out a little when shaken, honestly, no big deal IMO if there's a little spilt water.
Yes, the liquid is a bit hard to squeeze up if you don't out a lot in the cup. Took me a little while to figure that out. if you fill it up half way or more then you shouldn't really have a problem.
Yes, this, along with most other straw cups seems to magically defy gravity as the liquid flows up the straw slowly dripping out of the top. One thing I have learned with playtex cups (these are the only brand DS uses so I don't know about other brands) the straw does not need to be tightly pulled up all the way into the cap. If you do not pull it up all the way, the likely hood of the magic straw is reduced. Also, on the playtex cups if you tighten the cap slowly allowing the pressure from inside the cup to come out it doesn't always leak. Also releasing some of the pressure by taking a sip helps too.
So, IMO, the complaints are petty. DS took to the straw very quickly and was off bottles and drinking out of straw cups 100% two days before his first birthday!!!
