any HS teachers working on SLO's this summer??

I am. i just think it's a little late to start. I feel like I'm going to be overwhelmed. I would have started but I have to meet with my coordinator first.

My department all sat down together on the last day of school and banged ours out... that was not a fun morning, but I'm glad to be done with it. (We submitted and never heard back, so I'm guessing they were ok... Chat Icon ) Good luck. I know what a pain they can be.

Re: any HS teachers working on SLO's this summer??

Can I vent about this for a minute...

I teach in a LI district.

We had one video conference from the state at a faculty meeting.

ONE very poorly made video conference.
That's it.

That's ALLLLL the talk/training/curriculum writing we have had on anything new coming down from the stateChat Icon Chat Icon in my ENTIRE district.

Their excuse last year was we were on contingency.

All dept. chairperson (we don't have coordinators) were cut from the budget last year... permanently!!! Each AP was in charge of 3 depts over and above their AP duties.

My principal retired (perfect timing, I don't blame him at allChat Icon ).

New principal.

Possibly 2 brand new AP's from out of district. They will be younger than me.

And there was a "personnel matter" with last year's union pres... can't discuss. It would make a great show for Bravo.

They were so preoccupied about passing the budget this year, admins. are clueless. They keep telling us to visit the state's website. One lesson on the Gettysburg AddressChat Icon

No time given.
No curriculum writing.
Not one teacher sent to a conference.
No $$ for ANY curriculum writing, EVER. Not one hour, not $50.

By coworker just attended a conference (paid for it herself...$$$$) heard other teachers complaining about their districts and this issue and trust me, the worst of them are MILES ahead of usChat Icon Chat Icon

My own kids will be in kindergarten next year. My OWN kids will need me to help them with their school work. After over 15+ years of teaching and I can't keep getting 4-5 hours of sleep a night.

I'm scared and pi$$ed about this.
I have THREE preps on the high school level next year.

My coworker is coming by tomorrow morning and we are going to try to wade through this on our own for two hours while by kids are at camp. My DR is packed with schoolwork.

Please excuse me but this next year is going to be an absolute cluster-you-know-what!!

Sorry about the vent. If you read this entire thing, you get a gold star. Chat Icon

I'm in a private school and we are sooooo incredibly behind on this. I emailed my chairperson over a week ago and he hasn't emailed me back. Then we had a meeting at the end of the school year to discuss this and the AP said I'll send you an email about it - umm---it's almost August! I'm just attempting to read through the state site and click on random sources. No idea whether or not I'm looking at things correctly but I'm at a point where I am going to do what I want to do because this probably won't last another two years. And at the same time, they are trying to implement a freshmen skills curriculum in every subject area and we haven't received any details about that. I did get a brief description though so I know where to leave time for it. I wanted to have everything done by now so that I can enjoy my break!! Technically, I haven't been told what I am going to be teaching yet either but can take a guess. In my students words, "September is going to suck!!"

If your SLO is in a class that ends in a regents, you can use a past regents the first day of school to get a baseline and then create a SLO about where you want the kids to be at the end of the Regents.

here's a link to a good source of templates

I have a PP that explains SLOs too, if anyone wants to fm me their email

ETA: good link for K-8 PDAs , but technically you cannot use them if you are not part of TC, but you can tweak to make your own.

I totally agree that you can use a past Regents exam, but just remember that it has to get graded pretty quickly so you may want to cut it back because I know that I'll be teaching three geometry classes which is my 50%+ population and I'll have roughly 65 to 70 students...personally, I know I don't want to grade 65 full Regents exams. Chat Icon

Our SLO's have 17 to 20 questions...no multiple choice (so the kids can't guess at something they don't know), with a cover page where they'll put their answers, and the answers are right or wrong (no partial credit). If the course ends in a Regents exam, we took past Regents questions (some of which they SHOULD know and most of which they will have NO idea).

If you have any questions, please feel free to FM me! I teach in a HS in Nassau and our stuff was sent up to the state by the end of the school year so we're basically done with it. I may even have a copy of our Geometry pre-test if anyone wants to see it!

Good luck!

At my old school, we were told if we used a Regents exam, we needed to use the ENTIRE thing since it is scaled... Not sure if this information has changed.

Thank you everyone for your replies. You were all so helpful. I am meeting with my coordinator soon. A couple of people mentioned being overwhelmed with grading their exams but from what I understand...the teacher cannot grade the exams. Am I right? UGH!

Re: any HS teachers working on SLO's this summer??

I only just learned about SLOs while working on my admin internship this summer on LI.

As a NYC teacher, my principal hasn't mentioned them to me at all yet (or the rest of the school).

You cannot grade your own exams, BUT....you can grade someone else's! For example, I will be teaching geometry and algebra this year...therefore I can grade any other level (algebra 2/trig, pre-calc, stats, etc).

I'm in NYC we are not doing SLO's. I wouldn't worry -- I don't think they can use them to rate you next year anyway.
