Any mommies have the Nikon D40?

Please tell me about it. Likes..dislikes...how easy/difficult it is to use, etc...

I heard from my mother that I'm getting that for my birthday this year!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I see them advertised for about 500 but I'm not seeing a flash. Do I need one? Or do you usually take pics without the flash?

I'm so excited!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have the D50 but my parents have the D40. I love it more than mine. You don't need an extra flash, it comes with one attached that pops up when you need it but I would get a lens cover. It saved my camera countless times.

My favorite feature on this camera is continuous shoot. You just press on the button and it keeps taking pics in this mode. Its great to catch kids doing stuff.

I have the D50, but I think I saw the D40 on sale in the Target circular for this week ($600 with lens). Plus there was a Target gift card for $50 (It think) if you bought it.

I am hoping to get one for Christmas this year too! A couple of months ago I bought the Canon SD800 and I am so not satisfied with it. It is great for quick shots on the go but it is so limited. I want to take really great pictures!

Ooh.. I have it and I love it. I am by far, not a professional. I am so happy with my photos that I take in the "auto" mode. I pretty much have just used it as a point and shoot so far. When I get time to read the manual or take a class- I am sure my photos will be outstanding! My MIL has the D50- and I like mine a lot better- I think the viewing screen is bigger. The D40 is much lighter--
I am sure you will love it!

I just got it!!!Chat Icon
It takes beautiful pictures..Still have to read/study the entire manual & get lots of practice...but so far so good!!!Chat Icon
It was between the D40 & the D80, but since I'm a beginner, this was the best choice, plus I saw the D80 & got intimidated by itChat Icon ...the D40 just looked more user-friendly to me- and more affordableChat Icon .

I just got it also, and LOVE it so far! Like others have posted, I usually use it in the auto mode, since I haven't had time to read the manual and play with it. It's a great camera for the money.

We got it! And we love love love it! Granted it's our first SLR so nothing like that to compare it to but compared to our regular digital it's amazing and turned out to be very easy to use. The manual is a little daunting but we pretty much just use the auto setting so it's a breeze for now. It has an attached flash so you don't have to worry about that. I know that was one of your questions. And the basic lens is really good. I'm sure we'll want another one down the line but for now this one is great!

I have the Nikon D40X and it is great!! I didnt upgrade to the better lens but now I wish I did. It comes with 18-55mm I want a lens that zooms much closer. I havent really used to Automatic function, I set it to the proper surroundings pictures come out clear and sharp....look at this one photo.

And no, I hate the flash! I try to use natural light if I can. I doubt an additional flash is needed.

What would be the next best lens to get after mastering the one that comes with this camera?

Yeah! LOOKS like a great deal!! Maybe you should opt for the better lens since the difference is only $30. I am not sure what the difference between the lenses is because I never actually played with them. I have to make a run to store and physically see for myself.

The photo of my son's hand is zoomed in but I was standing within feet of him so it came out pretty good. You may like the 18-55mm ya never know!
