any nurses on here?
i'm considering going back to school... and i was thinking of attempting nursing. i'd have to go part-time after work and don't even know where to begin, what schools offer a nursing program; how long it takes to get the degree; what all it entails. my mom is a retired nurse... but she went to school for it so long ago. how hard is it to get hired on long island and what pay scale could i expect to start at? anybody can offer some answers and advice? thanks.

ok i'll try to answer some of your questions.
all sorts of degrees out there.. i would recommend getting a bachelors degree but you won't really make any less money with an associates .. plus if you get an associates you can get some money from your employer once you are a nurse and go on and get your bachelors. so you could start out a a two year school like Suffolk, or Farmingdale. then work your way thru stonybrook or Molloy.
where to begin... if you don't have any college credits you need to get started with prereqs. you will need a basic psych, sociology, english and anatomy 1 and 2 to get in ..i would go talk to the recruters at the school to make sure you are taking the right classes.
there are jobs waiting for you so i would n't worry about getting hired at all!!
nowadays, you can basically pick the exact unit you want to work on and get hired right out of school and they will train you.
payscale varies from hospital to hospital.. the further out east you get the less you make the closer to nassau or the city the more you make.. i would say the average is 68000 for starters.. but i work for the state and we are underpaid so i could be wrong about that!

I am an RN also. Nassau University also offers an associate degree program. I already had a Bachelors in another degree and then got my associates in Nursing at Farmingdale. My hospital reimburses me up to $10,000 a year for school so I am now in school for my NP (nurse practioner). The pay scale posted by the previous poster is correct plus if you work nights you get a night differential which is about $5000 in my hospital.
It is pretty easy to get a job. Nurses are in such high demand and we are always short staffed. FM me if you have any questions.

thank you both for your help...
i should have said, i have an associates degree in liberal arts as well as maybe a semesters worth of credits towards a bachelors in psychology. i guess i would have to sit down with someone at a school and figure out what classes i need to take.
i am a police officer with almost 5 years on the job, but am thinking about going a different route because i am out of the house 11.5 hours a day (without getting any overtime) because of my commute, i get stuck late often, and the gas prices are killing me. dh and i want to start a family, and i just feel like with a different career - i could work closer to home and probably make more money. 68k to start??? i have been a cop for 5 years and only make 50k... and i get shot at, so it sounds hella good to me 
like i said though, i do have a career - so going back to school would have to be done very, very part time. do you think this is something feasible? how long do you think it would take me?

i've been a nurse for a long while now, married to a cop. They only benefit to staying on the job is that your retirement is sooooo much better than ours.. Depending on where you work, your benefits are so much better also..Alot of cops that became nurses, wait until retirement and become nurses after, so then you really only have to work part time and you could get the best of both worlds.. Also, i work 12.5 hour shifts, so i'm out of the house 13 hours every time i work. Just another side to think of, but it is a great job to have when you are a mother!

dh is a cop too, so i could use his benefits... plus i will be able to "retire" as opposed to quit, so when i hit my 20 year anniversary, i'd still start to collect my pension, however small. i do know that nurses can work long hours... but i'd rather be out of the house 13 hours a day/3 days a week, than 12 hours a day/5days a week, plus get mandated overtime when i have things to do at home, or get stuck late because someone gets shot half an hour before i'm supposed to go home etcetc
thank you for the advice though.... this is just an idea i'm tossing around

well, i work for the state like i said before and our benefits are probably just as good as the cops. just a guess!

I have a few questions for the nurses as well....
what is the difference between a nurse and a nurse practioner? I was looking at the pediatric nurse practioner program is this a step up from an RN?
how hard is it to get into the program? is there really a long wait?

a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is the masters level nurse.
