any other nurse moms currently a SAHM, and or anyone really... looking for some support

So ive been a sahm for about a year and a half now... i was taken out of work at 24 weeks pregnant because of preterm labor. so i havent worked since then my dd is now 1!

anyway i will try and make this as short as possible... I went to nursing school (im an LPN) and graduated in 2008... i busted my hump and did well and was extremely proud of myself for doing so well and finding something that i really loved. I worked for about a year before being taken out of work by my OB, way before i had planned. and my original plan was to go back part time and use family to watch abby. Well plans changed as we saw how family was with her and neither of us (dh or myself) felt comfortable leaving her nor did we want others raising our child (just our opinion)so It was not feasable for me to go back full time and pay for daycare so the decision was for me to stay home. Ive been VERY happy and comfortable with my decision up till the last few weeks.

i wouldnt trade the past year for the world but now im feeling like im losing my skill, i will be worthless when i decide to go back to work because i will have lost my knowledge. Whos going to hire me?!? things are VERY VERY tight financially so i feel like working part time would really help... but then i have issues and so does dh with whos going to watch abby?!? the one person we both 100% trust to watch her the problem is that she works 2 jobs and i cannot expect her to watch abby on her only day off. she has a life too. and then there comes the curve ball of we want to have another baby... why cant things in life just be black and white end of story?

so i guess im just looking for support that things will work out... anyone out of their field for extended periods of time and go back to work and be ok? i think im looking for confirmation that if im out a fwe more years that i can go back and not be a dumb dumb when i get there!Chat Icon sorry im having a pitty me day! ETA: please dont quote ill most likely take this down... if you made it this far thanks!

I would try and find a nany/babysitter that you trust and use that. Or look into PT daycare. Maybe there is a place you can work that does daycare? Maybe a school or daycare that needs a nurse?

Can you take on a few hours at night, a couple days a week or a Sat or Sun? Just to stay fresh and earn some money?

This way, DH would be there to watch the kids?

One of my friend's nieces does this, and is a 1:1 LPN with a patient and is just the weekend nurse. This way she has people to mind her kids, but makes some money and keeps her skills current. If you stay out of nursing for more than a couple years I think the skills would need refreshing.

Does your husband work during the day? I'm also a nurse and work 4pm-12am so that I am home with DD all day and then DH gets home at 3pm and takes over so there is no childcare neccessary for us.

If your husband works till 5 then you could just find pt childcare in the meantime, just a thought,

your skills come right back when you get in the swing of things.

I agree-if that is your only family day, I wouldn't give it up either.

Maybe look into a babysitter who can come to your house a few nights a week while you pick up some hours? Or, the weekend day that your DH works anyway?

I am not a nurse, but what about working somewhere per diem and only working 1 day a week just to keep your resume and skills current?

I was going to suggest working per diem also.

I am a nurse and took a leave of absence when I had DS. I went back to work 3/4 quarter time and was also nervous that I was going to lose my skills. I did better than I thought I would have and now rotate b/w 2 & 3 days weeks. I work a lot of weekends so I can be home with DS and so far it is working out well. A coworker of mine was out on disability for awhile and she recently came back. She had the same reservations you have but she is doing fine. We were both able to get back into the swing of things fairly quickly.

Good luck!
