Any preggo teachers going on maternity leave at end of school year?
I'm stressing about planning for a sub!
I'm due June 21. Last day of school (for the kids) is June 24.
I gave personnel the date of June 12 to be safe but told them I'd work past that if I felt up to it.
But...this is what stresses me out about this. What I like about leaving on June 12 is that I can be 100% prepared for my sub for the last week & a half of school. If I continue to work, and let's say, two days into the week I'm going to the hospital...the sub plans will clearly change because I've been teaching. To me, giving myself a definite date makes it easier in that respect.
I'm a specialist (music), and often my several sections don't always coincide as far as schedules because of holidays, field trips, etc...so that makes planning a chore sometimes for a sub.
So...ideally I'd love to save up my sick time and not use too much of it and work til the end.
But for peace of mind...I like the idea of leaving early.
That's my story. How do you plan on dealing with it? Does it stress you out, if you're working til the end, the unpredictability of it? Am I the only loon here?
I'd love to hear your plans, thanks!

Re: Any preggo teachers going on maternity leave at end of school year?
Tara- as you know I am planning on June 12 being my last day as well. I am due June 20th. I teach at the high school level so June 12th is actually our first day of final exams. I really do not have to worry about leaving plans because all I will have to do during that last week and a half is proctor exams.
My final will actually be done in class and graded before I go out. The only difference will be if I need to go out before the 12th and if that is the case I will call a friend in the building and they will leave the sub plans for me.
Honestly, I am not too worried at all. The only thing I would like to be sure I accomplish is getting all my grades done and compute final grades and etc....

oh shoot- you just reminded me, report cards! I better get them done way before June 12! Granted my report cards are a piece of cake- but I do about 400+!! We're actually making our specialist schedule for next year way earlier this time cuz of me.

Tara- I'm going to say this in the nicest way possible- work until the last day you can! Yes, it will make leaving sub plans easier to leave on June 12, BUT what if you go a week late and don't need sub plans at all? (not that I'm wishing that on you ) And so what if you go before your date and it messes up your plans? You are like me- you give 110% everyday, even 32 weeks pregnant, you are STILL thinking about other people's children. STOP! You need to save your days for your little one and if that means your sub plans get messed up and the lessons aren't great, so what? The sub and the children will survive. They're going to be out of their minds the last week anyway! This is JMHO, I hope you don't mind!

Re: Any preggo teachers going on maternity leave at end of school year?
I am a school psychologist at the high school level. I am due June 5 but I had an original due date of June 10 so there is a possibility I may go later.
I am working until Friday May 29. I have so many days saved and I can only use my sick time until the end of the school year.
My job is extremely stressful & I am so busy right now with evaluations, annual review meetings, counseling, etc. So I spoke with my doctor and that is my last day for now...hopefully, I can make it until that day. Only about 1 month to go of work!

ITA!! i was due on the last day of school 2 yrs ago. i went a 2 days before it. so i worked til the bitter end. i am a special too- school librarian. anyway, it was totally worth it b/c i could then use the time towards when the baby was actually here. my friend on the other hand left early. baby was really late and she was bored out of her mind and lost those days. anyway, don't worry so much about the plans especially with it being june. believe me, it seems hugely important now but it won't after the baby is here. i just left simple stuff to get through the rest of the year just in case but never had to use it. when september rolled around then i left the big stuff b/c i had a sub for the entire year. good luck whatever you decide!

i agree. i'm due june 7th and i'm planning on working until the end as i need those days. i'm hoping on making it through the first week of june at the very least.
take all of your time, and don't worry about a sub. being that close to the end of the year the kids are going to be ready for summer anyway, so a less than perfect lesson plan isn't going to be the end of the world - you've got your own family to worry about! the sub will manage just fine. if you're really worried, have a file of shorter lessons and back up plans (that take maybe one day to teach, etc.) for the sub to pick and choose from.
in my case, our subs are useless. i've given up planning out lessons as they never get used. i come back and there are coloring books on my desk (i teach middle school special ed, but coloring books are WAAY below their level). it's really frustrating. i now just keep files of organized work (addition, subtraction, reading comp., etc.) on my desk and a file of past general lesson plans and make sure my para knows where they are just in case.

Work as long as you can.
I'm due May 7th (CS) & I'm working until this Friday (May 1). I planned my book for the sub & went over my plans w/ her & prepared for their stepping up ceremony & end of year reports.

That is interesting what you said about taking days. In my district, since I am due at the end of June, I can only use days until the last day of school. It's not like I actually get 6 weeks because it is the summer. So in my case, I want to take a few days before the baby is born because I won't really have to use many of my days anyway. If I work until my due date, I would have to take 4 days. If I stop a week early I will have to take 9 days. It isn't that much of a difference to me.

Re: Any preggo teachers going on maternity leave at end of school year?
I guess I'm thinking about saving your days overall and not even just right now for the baby. I know from my friends that have had babies that they are constantly having to use their own sick days when their children get sick. It gets to the point where they run out of days for themselves because they use all their days for their little one.
I can absolutely understand wanting a week before you are due to just prepare and not feel rushed though. But you never know what's going to happen!
