here too. MLS from Queens as well. Let me know if I can answer anything, as well.

"mom2tom" your syracuse program...what was that called? Was that a program through NYC? I vaguely remember an incentive through Syracuse. Was it someone's name or something like that?

It depends...my last school I had a totally fixed schedule (K-3) I would have open library (to exchange books) the first period; 3-5 classes; extra help for Kindergarteners (it was really that I pulled the kids that didn't need help and we did small week long library projects). Within there there's lunch, prep and library maintenance. I had an aide for only ONE period! So she would check in books in the morning and shelve as much as she could, but a lot of it fell on me too. I was NOT a prep though.

My new school (2-6) I have a both fixed and flexible schedule. Open Library, 2-3 classes, prep/lunch/maintenance, and then the rest of the empty spots will be flex time, when teachers can sign up for library time. I AM a prep.

At a JHS/HS level, you would have all flex time and probably lunch time students.

I'm sure the other LMS will agree, there can be a lot of maintenance and if you don't have an aide, it all falls on you.

My husband is thinking of getting his second Master's in Library Science...I've heard that it's hard to do the internship portion if you are a full time teacher...is that true?? Any advice on any particular programs??

it's very hard to do the program not being a teacher first (QC rarely accepts people who aren't certified teachers first), so they were quite accommodating.

some people did the internship over two semesters - however they could get the hours in. some people did the internship at private schools (green vale school was very popular to do it over public school breaks) - you just have to do the internship with a certified school librarian - which they had. some people took sabaticals/maternity leaves. It's not easy...but it's 150 hours and if you get creative...not too hard either.

I will say that QC is a challenging program. The thesis is a full doctoral level thesis. every other MLS program in the US has the abbreviated thesis, but you can work in a group and work off the work of another thesis (i.e I worked with 3 other people and we had a thesis that compiled info from 1985-1995, we did 1995-2005) I wouldn't change anything about going to QC.

Re: Any School Librarians out there?

Thanks everyone for the great info. I was also concerned about the internship portion, but it looks like it can be done while teaching. I am a hs teacher now (but home on maternity leave) so I have access to my library and wonderful librarian. I was also told that I since my day ends earlier than than the elementary schools in my district, I may be able to work something out. Maybe get a schedule with last period as my lunch and then run to an elementary or middle school. THanks again for all the great info!
