I would like to pull your son (insert name) informally for speech services once per week.

Informally means that his numbers weren't in the range for him to be classified, but the teacher has room in her schedule, and is trying to service anyone who may need a little help. Kind of like giving him a boost.

As a teacher and a parent, I am all for this!

ETA: You have a right to refuse this if you feel that he doesn't really need the extra help, and if you don't want him to miss anything in the classroom. Weigh your options, but you are lucky that you get the option...so many districts are cut so low right now that they can't really do something like this!

thanks so much for this... i don't plan on refusing, he has been receiving speech since 18 months but was discharged from CPSE.

K is only half day in our district so I am worried what he will be missing

Re: any speech pathologist out there... working in a school district

i'm a speech pathologist in a sschool... i work in NJ so it might be a LITTLE different, but i'll try to help.
i know a lot of states are trying to push an RTI model of services (Response to Intervention). basicaly, this offers different "levels" of help to students, to try to help them before classifying them as SPecial Ed, with a full IEP.
so most likely, in your son's case the speech therapist feels that he can use some help, but doesn't need a full IEP. a full IEP would last for a whole year, and would require a whole bunch of meetings and paperwork. a lot of times, especially with young kids in K.... once we show them how to make the sounds, they catch on really quickly. SOO the speech teacher is probably thinking of taking him once a week for like 6-8 weeks to see how he does, before she goes through the whole paperwork process of giving him a speech IEP.
I LOVE this idea! unfortunately, NJ hasn't really caught on to this idea. and i end up doing SOO much speech IEP paperwork for kids who just have "simple" articulation problems.
Good luck!! feel free to FM me with any questions Chat Icon
